UNITED sTATEs :PATENT OEEIOE.
JOHN COMSTOCK, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
BIT-STOCK 0F BRACES.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COMsTOOK, of the city of New London, in the State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters in the different figures designate like parts.
The nature of iny invention consists in the manner of operating the catchY which The respective parts not herein otherwise described are made in the usual manner. The respective parts are made of any wood or meta-l or of wood and metal, as shall be most convenient. y
Figure l is an elevation of the brace with the bit therein. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the bit. Fig. 3 is a vertical sect-ion of the lower end of the brace-the part in which the bit is fastened. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of Fig. 3. Figs. l and 2 are half size. Figs. 3 and I are full size.
A is a. cylindrical ring which itsclosely over the lower end of the brace, as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 4.
Z? is the catch which slides in a sockety in the lower end of the brace, as shown in Fig.
The cylindrical ring slips around .the end 10,307, dated December 13, 1858.
ca-tch 7) backA after the ring A has been tirned back and the screw o has slid off o it. To use the brace put the bit in the usual socket in the brace with the notch toward the catch Then turn the ring A so that the point 0f the screw c will ride upon the.
back of catch Y). This will force the catch in the notch ofthe bit, holding it iirmly and securely, when it is ready for use. To
remove the bit turn the ring back andas soon as the end of the screw is off of the catch the helical spring will push the catch out of the notch. s.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim therein as new and rdesire to securel by Letters Patent is-' The arrangement of the ring, A, with its pin .or screw, c, in combination with the eccentric-shaped back catch, b, and the helical spring, CZ, the whole being combined and arranged substantially as set forth.
