SOCKET FOR AUGERi-HANDLES AND BRACES.

T0 all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, AnsrrAL H. McKin- LEY, of Higginsport, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sockets tor Auger-Handles, de.; and l do hereby declare the following to be a Jfull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ot' this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device for readily shipping and unshipping an auger or other boring tool to and from its handle, so that one handle may' serve a greatnumber and variety of tools and thus save a great deal of room in the tool chest.

ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a handle with my device attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the saine.

(a) is an ordinary wooden auger-handle.

(o) is a socket made to it the shank of the tool, and provided with a screw tang and nut (o) by which it is secured within the handle. This socket has a circular head (CZ) to which is fitted so as to inclose it, a cap or cover (e) (shaped like a pill box lid) having at its middle a square opening (c) agreeing in size with t-he Vmouth (5') of the socket. This cap is slotted to receive three pins or buttons which being screwed fast into the head (d) retain the cap to its place on the head and at the saine time perinit a slight vibration ot the cap about its center. rlChe rim margin ot the cap has notches (f g) to receive a spring (It) which is attached to the handle.

The operation is as follows: rlhe cap being brought with its square aperture coinciding with that of the socket, then t-he shank of the tool being inserted, the cap is slid back again, and the straight sides of the cap aperture overlapping the projecting corners of the shank, hold the tool securely within the socket, and the cap is retained to its place bythe spring within the notch.

am aware that devices for attaching and detaching the bits and handles of angers and other like tools have long been in use, but they are all as ar`as l know more or less objectionable, for instance, the spring catch of the common center bit stock, is very liable to become inoperative from rust and the contrivances lately patented are practically useless from their' liability to get out of order. l therefore do not claim the enabling the shipping or unshipping of a bit or auger from its stock or handle that having long been accomplished, but

rThe peculiar arrangement of mechanism by which I enable the shipping and unshipping of t-he bit and handle ot an auger or other boring tool that is to say the socket having a circular head and vibrating cap, whose aperture can be made at one position to coincide with the mouth of the socket, and in the other position to oppose its straight edges to the projecting corners of the shank, the cap being retained in the desired position by spring and notch as described or its equivalent.
