CHARLES LINDSEY, OF WAYNESBORO, MISSISSIPPI.
cnoss'cur sawnnnnrs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LINDSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaynesboro, in the county of WVayne and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crosscut-Saw Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to saw handles, and more particularly to the class of detachable handles for cross cut saws.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a handle of this character wherein the same can be detachably mounted on the saw blade without the use of belts or other fasteners.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a handle of this character which can be removed from the saw blade without requiring the use of tools, and which will be automatically fastened thereon when engaged with the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a handle which is simple in construction, novel in form, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a saw blade of the cross cut type, showing a handle constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of F ig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the handle removed.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 5 designates a tubular barrel preferably constructed from metal, although the same may be made from any other suitable material, on one end of which is threaded a cap 6 formed on its outer surface with spaced notched bearings 7 in the notches of which is engaged the upper edge of the saw blade Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 5, 1913.
Patented Aug. 4, 1914. Serial No. 783,127.
8, the barrel being designed to serve as the handle proper.
Slidably fitted in the opposite end of the barrel 5 is a plug 9 carrying a stem 10, the same having a threaded end 11 which detachably engages in an internally threaded socket 12 formed on one end of a shank 13, the opposite end of which is provided with an elongated loop 1 1 in which is received a saw blade so that the said loop will embrace the blade 8, the latter being formed with a notch 15 to form a seat for the loop let to prevent displacement thereof. The cap 6 is provided with a central aperture 16 through which is passed the loop 14C to permit free sliding movement of the shank 13 in the barrel 5 for a purpose presently described.
Surrounding the stem 10 and shank 13 and within the barrel 5 is a coiled expansion spring 17, one end of which works against the cap (3, while its opposite end works against the inner end of the plug 9 and serves to act upon the loop 1=l to sustain it engaged in the seat 15 in the blade 8 for securely fastening the handle thereon.
When it is desired to remove the handle from the saw blade 8 the plug 9 is pressed inwardly within the barrel 5, thus forcing the loop 1-1 outwardly from the said barrel against the resistance of the spring 17 and disengaging the said loop from the seat 15 in the saw blade so that the handle can be removed therefrom.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearlv understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
\Vhat is claimed is:-
A detachable handle for saw blades comprising a cylindrical barrel, a centrally perforated cap detachably mounted on the end of the barrel, a push member projecting from and slidably fitted in the opposite end of the barrel, the said cap being formed with notches forming seats for the upper edge of the saw blade, an elongated loop adapted to embrace the saw blade and slidable through the cap and having a stem formed with a threaded socket, a connecting rod passed through the push member and In testimony whereof I aflix my signature detuehably engilged iln the threaded socket in presence of two Witnesses. in the stem, ant a coi ed com ression s rin mounted Within the barrel 215d surroul l ding' CHARLES LINDSEY 5 the stem and connecting rod and'having its Witnesses:
ends engaging the push member and cap re- J. J. PACE; spectively. JOHN PAUL.
