V i Specification of Letters Patent. PatentedAug-j 3-1 1915,
Application filed December 31, 1914. Serial No. 879,8 87.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ARTHUR LEE LreoN, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pecos, in the county of Reeves and :State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing;
This invention relates to a detachable handle for tools and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient mechanism whereby several different tools may be attached to the handle within a minimum amount of time.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient handle 1 is a plan view of a portion of thehandle partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool gripping portion of the handle showing the forward end thereof in engagement with a tool head. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking mechanism for the handle, the handle being partly broken away to show the securing lug or tongue. Fig. 4c is a sectional view of an embodiment of, the present invention showing a slightly modified form of the locking mechanism and tool engaging portion of the handle. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the forward end of the handle mechanism shown in Fig. 4:.
It should be understood that the present device has special reference to a handle which is adapted to engage or support any number of different kinds or shaped tools,
* and that these tools may be readily placed upon or disengaged from the handle when so desired. It is not desired to limit the present application to any special form or design of tool which may be carried by the handle, audit is desired to be pointed out that any shape or desired form of tool may be mounted upon the handle without departing from the spirit of the invention.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the shank of the handle which is provided with a rearwardly exv5 and tending metallic web 2. A plurality of wooden or other filler blocks are placed upon the web 2 and are firmly held thereon by means of suitable rivets 1-. The shank 1 1s provided with a rigid tool engaging a movable tool engaging jaw 6. The aw 5 is provided with a plurality of pock- V ets or notches 7 for the purpose of facilir tating the securing of a tool 8 thereto in any desired or suitable manner. The movable or swinging jaw 5 are formed substantially semi-circularin shape-s0 as. to produce a circular pocket :for gripping the tool .8. The pivoted jaw 6 is pivotally secured to the stationary jaw? by means of a pivot pin 9. The jaw ii is provided with a rearwardlyextendingweb 10, which web is provided with an integral inwardly extending housing 11. The housing llis provided with an aperture 12 formed atone end thereof for the purpose of receiving the forward end 13 f the spring pressed locking bolt 14-.
The shank 10 is provided at its rear end with a hinged locking tongue 15, which tongue 15 is provided with a guiding lug 16 uponv its inner face for the purpose of receiving the spring pressed locking bolt 14;. As is illustrated in Fig. '1 in dotted lines, the pivot jaw or shank 10 may be swung to the position shown in dotted lines for the purpose of removing the tool 8- from engagement with the handle. The lockingbolt 14: carries a coil spring 17 which bears against the inwardly extendinglug 16, and
,this bolt 1a also carries an operating knob 18which is fixedly secured to the bolt and against which one end of the coil spring 17 presses. It should be understood that the locking bolt 14 is adapted to lit in the aperture 12 of the shank 10 when in its normal position so as to allow the shank v10 to be,
held in a "locked position relative to the shank 1. The knob 18 carries an inwardly projecting finger 19, which is fixedly secured to the belt 141, and this finger 19 works in a longitudinally extending slot 20 formed in the tongue 15. The rear end of the tongue 15 is provided with a rearwardly projecting narrow lip 21, which lip is adapted to overhang the body portion of the shank 1 as indicated at 22 for the purpose of holding the tongue 15 and shank 10 against outward swinging movement when the bolt 14 is in its normal position as illustratedin Fig. 1.
Particular attention is invited to Fig. 3
jaw G, as well as the stationary wherein the particular construction of the tongue is specifically illustrated. The
' narrow lip 21 is shown in Fig.3 by having a portion of the shank 1 broken away to inent of the invention wherein the shank 23 indicate the manner in-which the tonguelfi is formed with respect to the lip 21.
In Figs. 4 and 5there is shown an embodiis provided with a stationary jaw 2a to which jaw is hingedly secured the movable aw by'inean's of thejhinge 26 at the outer end thereof. The movable jaw 25 is provided l with a shank 27 having an inwardly projectspect to Fig. 1.
ing. housing' 28, which housing carries a spring pressed plunger 29fs1milar to the structure illustrated and described with rethrough a plurality of apertured lugs ,30and carries a pin 31 having an operating knob 32 formed thereon. The pin 31 works'ina longitudinally extending slot-"38 formed in the tongue 34: which is similarly constructed to the tongue 15 illustrated in Fig, 1. The springpressed plunger 29 works through an 'aperture 3t" formed'in the inwardly extending housing 28 for the purpose of hold- .ing the tongue 34ain a locked position with respect to the shank 27 In Fig. 51there is an in F-igJZL; a
illustrated a side elevation of the constructionwhich is specifically illustrated in de- Having thus described the inventlon what Y is claimed as new, is
lpA' device of the class described comprising a stationary shank and a pivotally mounted shank, tool" gripping means carried by said shanks, said pivotedshank provided with an inwardly extending casing adapted to fit insaid stationary shank, said pivoted shank provided 7 with a hinged tongue secured thereto, a projection carried by said'tongue and adapted to engage said Copies of this patent may be obtained for The plunger 29 works.
stationary shank for holding said pivoted shank in a set position with respect to said stationary shank, and locking means carried by. said tongue and engaging said pivoted shank for holding said tongue against outward swinging movement with respect to said stationary tongue.
2. A device of the class described comprising a stationary shank and a pivotally mounted shank, tool gripping means carried a by said shanks, said 1 pivotally mounted shank provided with a hinged tongue, said hinged tongue provided with a projecting rib adapted to engage a portion of said stationary shank for holding said pivoted shank in a set position with respect to said stationary shank, and locking means carried prising a stationary shank, a pivoted shank secured thereto, said pivoted shank provided with an inwardly extending integral casing, a pivoted tongue secured to said casing, a lip carried by said pivoted tongue, a
spring pressed plunger carried by said pivoted tongue, a knob working in said plunger for facilitating the throwing of the same to an inoperative position, and said inwardly extending casing provided with a pocket for receiving said plunger whereby said plunger may hold said tongue in a locked position with respect to said pivoted shank.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR LEE LIGON.
