THE NORRIS PETERS 60., PHOmJJTHQ. WASHINGTON, Dv c.
v PHILIP SHERMAN, or CHICAGO, ILLInors.
RAZOR.
Application filed December 12, 1913. Serial No. 806,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP SHERMAN, av former subject of the Czar of Russia, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razors and has for one object the provision of an improved safety guard for a razor blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a razor of improved construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a razor em v bodying my invention and shown partially in section, Fig. 2, a rear viewv of the same, and Fig. 3, a section taken on line wm of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a plate 1 provided at each side of each end with. clamping lugs or ears 2 which are formed integrally therewith and adapted to embrace an ordinary razor blade 3 when said plate 1 is moved longitudinally along the rear of said razor blade to hold said plate on said blade. Two swinging links 4 are hingedly connected to the central outer portion of plate 1 and a safety guard 5' is hingedly connected with the free ends of links 4 by means of lugs 5, as indicated. The edges of plate 1 are provided with notches 6 adapted to receive lugs 5 and links 4 are so arranged as to permit of the swinging of said guard plate from one side of blade 3 to the other, as will be readily understood. The guard blade 5 is provided with the usual safety fingers or projections 7 which are adapted to guard the edge of the razor in the usual manner. A springheld locking finger 8 is pivoted to one of the lugs 2 on each side of blade 3. and is adapted to lock the guard 5ffiat against the corresponding side of blade 3 or to release said guard when swung to the dotted line posi- Specification of Letters Patent.- Patented N 17 1914.
tion, indicated iniFig. 1. By this arrangement, the guard 5 may be readily adjusted to either side of the blade so as to permit of the use of either side of said blade thus greatly facilitating shaving operations.
The blade 3 is provided with a tang 9 adapted to enter a socket in a hollow tanghead 10 which is pivotally mounted in an ordinary razor handle 11 on the usual pivot 12; A spring 13 is arranged in head 10 and is provided with a catch 14 adaptedto engage a notch 15 in tang 9 to lock said tang releasably in position in said head. A push button 16 is secured to spring 18 to facilitate the release of tang 9 and a reinforcing spring 17 is arranged on spring 13, as shown. The inner end of head 10 is pro vided with the usual finger piece 18 for en-. gagement by the little finger in the usual manner for shaving. By this arrangement, it will be observed that one blade may be readily substituted for another, thus greatly facilitating the shaving operation and the sharpening of blades.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of-construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within: the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a member adapted to fit against the back of a razor" blade; clamping lugs rigidly connected with opposite sides of said member to embrace opposite sides of a razor blade; a safety guard secured to said member to move to opposite sides of said blade; and a spring locking finger pivoted to one of'said lugs and arranged to lock said guard inoperative position, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a member adapted to fit against the back of a razor blade; clamping lugs rigidly connected with opposide sides of said member to embrace oppo site sides of a razor blade; a safety guard secured to sa1d member to move to OPPOSUJQ' side of said blade and arranged to lock said guard in operative position, substantially as described.
3. The combination With a razor blade, of a back member fitting against the back of said blade; clamping lugs on each side of said member at each end thereof and embracing said blade; links hinged centrally to the outer sideof said back member; a safety guard hinged to the free ends of said links to swing to operative position at each side of said blade; and a spring locking finger pivoted to one of said lugs on each side of said blade and arranged to lock said guard in operative position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
PHILIP SHERMAN.
