SAFETY-RAZOR.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, 1915.
. Application filed May 22, 1915. Serial No. 29,369.
To all whom'z't may concem:
Be it known that I, EDGAR MORAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jacksonville, in the county of D-uvall and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-"Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, tclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in safety -razors, one object of the invention being to provide simple and eflicient means for holding the blade in position at any de sired adjustment.
A further object is to so construct a safety razor as to reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum without sacrificing stability, and so that blades may be accurately placed in position and readily removed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; F igure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a safety razor embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a view showing the hinged clamping plate raised to permit the insertion of a blade; Fig. 3 is a plan edge view; Fig. 4 1s a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
1 represents a guard'comb plate having fingers 2, 2 at its respective ends and provided between said fingers and extending from one to the other in a somewhat lower plane, with a comb bar 3, a slot or opening 4 being formed between said comb bar and the forward edge of. the plate. 1, for the escape of lather. The plate 1 is provided at its rear edge with a centrally located arm 5, which may be integral with said plate and having a. general triangular shape. The arm or extension 5 is so bent as to be'disposed at a more or less acute angle to the plate 1 and is rigidly secured to a handle 6, so that the blade carrying part of the device shall be inclined downwardly at an acute angle relatively to the handle.
The plate 1 is provided at each end near the rear edge, with upturned lugs or ears 7 carrying projecting pintles, to which latter,
a blade clamping plate 8 is hinged, said plate Sbeing provided at its endswith de pending lips 9 which lie adjacent to the ends of the blade 10 when the latter rests upon the plate 1. The cutting edge of the blade 10 will be disposed over the teeth of the comb bar, near the forward ends of said teeth and the clamping plateS isso proportioned that its forward edge will rest upon the upper face of the blade an appreciable distance rearwardly of its cutting edge. The back of the blade will be disposed between the lugs or ears 7 on the guard plate 1 and is engaged by set screws 11 passing through lugs 12 rising from the rear edge of plate 1. The set screws 11 provide simple means for adjusting the blade relatively to the teeth of the comb bar.
The guard plate is provided on its bottom face, centrally between its ends, with a pocketed member 13 having an elongated slot 14 and the arm or extension 6 on plate 1 is made with a notch 15 in line with said slot. A slide 16 is inserted into the pocketed member 13 and carries a pin 17 movable in the slot 14. The notch 15 permits the entrance of the pin 17 into the slot 14, but after the slide shall have been placed in position, this notch will be closed by a small finger 18 secured to the arm or extension 6, and this finger then constitutes a stop at one end of the slot for the pin the slide.
The slide 16 has a general hook shape and .its upper, member 18 is adapted to engage the clamping plate 8 (in a depressed central portion 19 thereof) and lock said plate in position to clamp the blade. The resilience of the hinged clamping plate will be such as will insure suflicient frictional engagement of the slide therewith, to prevent such accidental movement of said slide as might release the clamping plate. The slide may, however, be easily moved b the operator when he desired to remove the blade and afterward re-insert it.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a safety razor, the combination with 17 to prevent escape of.
a guard plate and a clamping plate hinged thereto, of a locking device approximately.
parallel to and having sliding connection with the guard plate and adapted to project over the rear hinged part of the clamping plate.
2. In a safety razor, the combination With a guard plate, and a clamping plate hinged thereto, of a pocketed member carried by and disposed approximately parallel to the guard plate, and a sliding lock device movable in' said pocketed member and adapted to project over the rear hinged portion of the clamping plate.
3. In a safety razor, the combination 'With a guard plate, and a clamping plate hinged Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereto, of a pocketedmember carried by the guard plate and having an elongated slot and a U-shaped locking device having one part movable "in saidpocketed member and provided With a'pin movable in said elon V gated slot, the other part of said locking device adapted to engage over the rear part of the clamping plate.
' In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of twos ubscribfive cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of latents, Washington, D. G."
