My invention relates to safety razors and has for its object to provide a razor including a blade holder formed with a body portion on which the blade may lie, and in providing a handle adapted to issue outwardly therefrom in oblique relation with respect thereto.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a safety razor in which the handle extends in an oblique direction with respect to the intersection of said blade and a plane containing said handle and parallel to the cutting edge of the blade.
A still further object of the invention resides in constructing the blade holder with a guard having teeth obliquely arranged with respect to the cutting edge of the blade.
A feature of the invention resides in providing a clamp including a clamp bar extending across the blade and pivoted at one end to swing toward and from the blade.
An object of the invention resides in providing a latch cooperating with the other end of the clamp bar for holding the clamp in clamping position.
A feature of the invention resides in forming the clamp bar with an arm and in pivotally connecting the clamp bar to the handle through said arm.
A still further object of the invention resides in constructing said arm with an ear disposed adjacent the handle and through both of which the pivot for the clamp bar extends.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing the clamp bar with a latch lug having a notch therein and in providing a catch cooperating with said notch to hold the clamp bar in clamping position.
A still further object of the invention resides in attaching to the handle a spring arm to which the catch is secured, whereby the catch may be moved into and out of engagement with the notch.
A feature of the invention resides in disposing the handle inwardly from the rear edge of the holder to leave a shoulder adjacent the same and in disposing said spring arm in engagement with the shoulder so that a single fastening member may be used for attaching the spring arm to the handle.
An object of the invention resides in employing a flat handle and in securing the same to the blade holder.

In the use of razors, I have found that the blade will more effectively cut when applied at an angle with respect to the direction of movement of the blade over the face so that the cutting edge draws along the beard instead of being projected directly against the same. The pres"- ent invention provides a razor whereby such action may be easily and readily had by simple manipulation of the razor in a convenient; and natural manner.

In Figs 1, 3 and 4, a razor'blade 16 is shown which is disposed within the receptacle 15 and resting upon the body l1. This razor blade is formed with a cutting edge 17 adapted to protrude from the holder in such a manner as to engage the beard and cut the same as will be presently described in detail. Although I have shown a razor blade formed with a heavy rib 18 it can readily be comprehended'that blades of the wafer type may also be utilized and blades having either single or double cutting edges, the usual projections being in such case provided on the body 11 for engagement with the notches or 110 openings in the blade to hold the same immovable upon the holder. Such features not forming any particular part of the present invention, have not been shown in this application.
For the purpose of manipulating the razor, a handle 18 is employed which is constructed of a flat strip of metal formed at its ends with two outwardly extending lugs 19 and 20. These lugs project through openings 21 in the body 11 of holder 10, which openings lie a short distance inwardly from the flange 12 of said holder. The lugs 19 and 20 are riveted upon the inner surface of the body 11 so that the handle becomes firmly attached to the holder and in a position inwardly from the flange 12 to leave a shoulder 22 on the body 11 on the underside thereof. The handle 18 is obliquely positioned with respect to the holder 10 so that the same extends outwardly beyond the holder at one end thereof. In the arrangement of the handle the same forms an acute angle with the intersection of a plane parallel with the cutting edge 17 of the razor blade and containing said handle and said blade.
The blade 17 is held in place within the receptacle 15 of holder 11 by means of a clamp which I have indicated in its entirety at 23. This clamp comprises a clamp bar 24 which is adapted to overlie the blade 16 and is disposed in close proximity to the cutting edge 17 of the blade.
The clamp bar 24 is formed at one end with a depending arm 25 which has bent outwardly from it an ear 26 adapted to lie against the inner surface of the handle 18. A rivet 27 passing joint- 1y through said ear and handle serves to pivotally connect the clamp to the handle so that the said clamp may swing from an open position, such as shown in Fig. 2, to a clamping position, as shown in Fig. 1.
For holding the clamp 23 in clamping position a latching device is employed which includes a latch lug or arm 28 disposed on the end of the clamp bar 24 opposite arm 25. This latch lug has formed in it a notch 29. The latching device further includes a catch 30 which is attached to a spring arm 31. The catch 30 is formed with athumb piece 32 by means of which the same maybe manipulated and through which the same is secured to the razor proper. A'rivet 33. passing through the thumb piece .32 and the spring arm 31 holds the catch attached to the same. The spring arm 31 is secured to the han- "dle 18 through a rivet or screw 34 and lies upon the rearward side of said handle with an edge thereof engaging the shoulder 22 formed on the underside of the blade holder 10. Through en- 'gagement with said shoulder a single fastener is required, said device being retained in proper position thereby. 'When the clamp is closed, catch 30 lies in the notch 29 and operatesto prevent the clamp from being released, thereby holding the razor firmly within the holder. When the thumb piece 32 is pressed rearwardly, the
catch 30 is disengaged from notch 29, releasing the clamp bar and permitting the same to swing into open position, as shown in Fig. '2.

The method of using my invention is as follows: The clamp bar 23 is first released by pressing the thumb piece 321 rearwardly and this clamp swung into open position, as shown in Fig. 2. The particular razor blade for which the device is designed is then inserted in the receptacle 15 of holder 10 and caused to lie upon the body 11 thereof. Clamp bar 23 is next moved into closing position. By means of a cam surface 37 formed on the lug 28 which is adapted to engage the catch 30, said catch is swung rearwardly out of position to allow the clamp bar to "be moved into closing position. When the clamp bar reaches its closed position, the catch 30 drops into notch 29 and holds the clamp from movement. In the manipulation of the razor the same is held through the handle 18 and the razor 9 drawn along the face in the direction of extent of the handle proper. This causes the cutting edge 1'7 of the razor to be drawn along the beard in an oblique manner instead of being projected squarely against the same. By such movement of the blade, the beard is more easily severed and the usual discomfort arising when the razor blade is not absolutely sharp or when the beard is stiff are prevented. During shaving the razor is at all times manipulatedin exactly the same manner as an ordinary safety razor, excepting that the same is drawn obliquely as specified. It will be found that the razor may be manipulated in and about the various corners and crevices of the face in identically the same manner as with the ordinary razor and at the safe time the cutting of the beard greatly facilitated.
The advantages of my invention are manifest. The razor is extremely simple andopera'tes to remove the beard in an extremely effective manner. Due to the drawing of the blade along the beard rather than projecting the same directly against the beard, cutting of the beard is produced instead of tearing as with ordinary razor blades and considerably greater comfort afforded the shaver. By means of the flat handle the razor is more easily manipulated and control is at all times had of the same so that no danger of the razor turning, in case the hands of the user are wet, will arise. By means of the clampused, the blade is firmly attached to the holder and can be easily and quickly detached by pressing upon the thumb pieceof the latch. Therazor can be constructed of sheet metal and at a nominal cost.
Changes in the specific forni of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent 1. A safety razor comprising a blade holder having a body upon which a safety razor blade may lie, a handle issuing outwardly from the 14:0 underside of said body and in oblique relation with respect thereto and extending toward one end of said holder, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie the razor blade and having an arm at one end extending below the holder and 5 toward the portion of the handle underlying the corresponding end of the clamp bar, an ear-issuing outwardly from said arm, means forming a pivot extending through said ear, and handle, for pivoting the bar relative to said blade holder, and
latching means at the other end of the bar for holding the clamp in clamping position.
2. A safety razor comprising a blade holder having a body upon which a razor blade may lie, a handle issuing outwardly from the underside of said body and spaced from the rear edge of said holder to leave a shoulder adjacent the same, a clamp including a clamp bar pivoted for movement toward and from said body to hold the blade therein, a latch lug on said clamp bar having a notch therein, a spring arm lying against said handle and having its edge engaging said shoulder, a single fastener for securing said spring arm to said handle, and a catch on said spring arm for engagement with said notch.

A safety razor comprising a blade holder having a body portion upon which a razor blade may lie, a handle issuing outwardly from said body portion, at one side thereof, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie a blade positioned upon said body, said bar having arms bent outwardly therefrom at its ends and straddling the body portion and a blade mounted thereon, said arms lying close to the ends of the blade, said handle extending in close proximity to one of said arms, means for pivoting said arm to said handle, a resilient member attached to said handle and extending toward the other arm, and latch means operated by said resilient member for engagement with the other arm to hold the clamp in clamping position.
4. A safety razor comprising a blade holder having an elongated body portion upon which a razor blade may lie, means forming a flange issuing outwardly from the underside of said body portion and disposed to one side thereof, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie a blade mounted upon said body portion, an arm bent outwardly from said bar, a leaf spring overlying said flange and secured thereto, said spring extending in a direction parallel with the direction of extent of said body portion and toward said arm, and latch means operated by said leaf spring for restraining said arm from movement.
5. A safety razor comprising a blade holder having an elongated body portion upon which a razor blade may lie, means forming a flange issuing outwardly from the underside of said body portion and disposed to one side thereof, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie a blade mounted upon said body portion, an arm bent outwardly from said bar, a leaf spring overlying said flange and secured thereto, said spring extending in a direction parallel with the direction of extent of said body portion and toward said arm, said arm having a notch therein, and an angle member secured to the end of said leaf spring, one leg thereof being adapted to extend into said notch to lock the clamp bar from movement, and the other leg extending below said notch to form a thumb piece by means of which the spring may be flexed to disengage the other leg from said notch.

A safety razor comprising a blade holder having a body upon which a safety razor blade may lie, a handle issuing outwardly from the underside of said body and extending toward one end of said holder, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie the razor blade and having an arm at one end extending below the holder and toward the portion of the handle underlying the corresponding end of the clamp bar, a pivot for pivoting said armto said handle to guide said bar for swinging movement toward and away from said holder, said pivot being spaced from said holder to cause the bar to clear said holder throughout the entire extent of said holder when the bar is away from the holder and latch means at the other end of the bar for latching the clamp bar in position.

A safety razor comprising a blade holder having an elongated body portion upon which a razor blade may lie, a fiat member issuing outwardly from the under side of said body portion and disposed to one side thereof, a clamp including a clamp bar adapted to overlie a blade mounted upon said body portion, an arm bent downwardly from said bar at one end thereof, a leaf spring overlying said member on one side thereof and secured thereto, said spring extending in a direction parallel with the direction of extent of said body portion and toward said arm, an ear bent outwardly from said arm and overlying said member on the other side thereof, and a rivet passing jointly through said member and ear for pivoting said bar from movement toward and from said body member.
