ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL J. BOYLER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1913.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL J. BOYLER, a citizen of Canada, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to safety razors and has for its object to provide a razor of this class which may be made at little cost, which is eflicient in use, and the parts of which may be quickly and conveniently assembled, or taken apart for cleaning.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective front v1ew of the improved razor, Fig. 2 a back view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the handle of the razor and integral with which is a blade-holding head 13 which extends at an angle therefrom, the said head being constructed at its front edge to form a toothed or comb-like guard 14. The blade 15 is maintained in place against the head 13 byv a holder having a clamping portion 15 from which extends a shank 16 Provided with a catch or clip 17 adapted to snap into an opening 18 formed in the handle 12. The blade holder is of spring metal. so that it will yield in forcing the catch into said opening. To release the holder for the purpose of removing the blade, it is only necessary to press on the portion of the said catch which projects through the opening in the holder.
The head 13 is provided on its outer face with small lugs 19 which are engaged by side projections 20 at the front edge of the clamping portion of the blade holder, so that when the catch 17 is forced into its holding opening 18 the said projections 20 will be forced against said lugs 19, and thus maintain the holder securely in place. The hold or positive engagement between the lugs 19 and the side projections 20 enables the front edge of the clamping portion 15 of the blade holder to be positively retained in place when pressure is applied to the shank 16 in forcing the catch 17 into its holding opening 18, so that a strong clamping grip on the blade 15 may be effected.
The head 13 is provided at its front corners with small inturned lugs 21 against which the front corners of the blade 15 rest and which lugs serve as stops to position the edge of the blade and prevent displacement of the said blade when the razor is in use.
In assembling the parts of the device for use the blade 15 is placed on the head 13 and the clamping portion or head 15' of the holder is then placed over the blade with the lugs or projections 20 on the said part 15 in engagement with the front edges of the lugs 19 on the head 13. Pressure is now applied to the spring shank 16 of the holder, against the resistance afforded by the engaged projections 20 and lugs 15, and the a catch or clip 17 on the spring shank 16 of the holder is then forced into holding onagement with the slot or opening in the handle 12.
The handle 12 is preferably provided at its edges with flanges 22 which serve to stiffen the same as well as to provide a somewhat ornamental finish and render the said handle better adapted to be grasped by the hand of the user in such a manner as to prevent slipping.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A safety razor the body of which com prises a handle having an opening, combined with a blade-holding head extending at an angle from said handle and provided at its front corners with stops to position the edge of the blade, and having, projecting forward of said steps, a comb or guard, a blade fitting against said head, and a blade holder formed of spring sheet metal and having a clamping portion fitting over said blade and a shank portion provided with a catch adapted to enter said opening in said handle to maintain the said blade holder in place, the said head being provided on its outer face with lu s and the said clamping portion of said ldlade holder having, at its front edge, projections which engage the front edges of said lugs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL J. BOYLER. Witnesses M. E. CARR, S. I. SPERRY.
