Description

A. TIREVOL.

II In AR/JT/Ofd 77/P5VOL A 7'7'OFP/VEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARISTIDES TIREVOL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAIR-TRIMMING APPLIANCE.
Application filed June 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARISTIDES TIREVOL, a subject of the King of Greece, and resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hair-Trimming Appliances, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to hair trimming appliances for barber's use well adapted for giving a finishing trim to a hair out.
A prime object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this kind having a guard element of improved form with a razor blade associated therewith adapted for convenient manual adjustment while the device is held in the hands to position it along different parts ofthe guard element as required. To this end I provide a guard element formed as a curved comb with handles at each end thereof and with a blade associated therewith adapted to be moved at each end by an operating element convenient to the respective handles so that the blade may be positioned variably along the guard member as required for different cutting and trimming effects.
The foregoing and other objects and features of the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be thereafter pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 shows in front elevation with one end broken away in section an appliance constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with one end sectioned on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
I provide a guard member in the form of a stiff curved comb 10 having teeth 11. This comb has extending at either end and preferably integral therewith handles 12 so that the device is adapted to be held by the operator in both hands. At one side, as shown, the convex side of the comb, I fit to slide endwise of the teeth thereof a razor blade 13, this blade being curved or bowed to conform to the curve of thecomb and extending throu hout the length of the body thereof. This lade is equipped at its ends with ears 14 suitably fixed as by rivets to pins 15 slidably fitted in bores 16 of the guard mem- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Serial No. 33,217. 1 I
her at a thickened portion 17 thereof Where the handles join the body of the comb. The handles are recessed as seen at 18 to permit the operation of leaf springs 19 which are fixed at 20 at the rear of said recesses and adjacent the outer ends of the handles, the inner free ends 21 of said springs acting against the ears l1 and pins 15 to normally press the razor blade 13 to a rearward limit of movement where its ends come against stop dogs or catches 22 which may be yieldingly mounted at the back of the comb to present stop shoulders preventing the blade from dropping out of the comb, but capable of being pressed in to permit it to be released when required. The slide pins 15 are equipped with push heads or buttons 23 at their outer ends. IVith this construction it will be understood that as the operator grasps the device by the two handles 12, say between the thumb and middle fingers of each hand, the heads or buttons 23 willbe in position so that the first finger of each hand will normally rest thereon or be adjacent thereto. Thus the device may be moved over the head, being intended more especially for the back and sides of the head to trim any unevenness that may have been left in the hair cutting and to catch any stray wisps of hair. By pressing down upon the respective buttons 23 the blade may be pressed down either equally at both ends to an intermediate point along the comb or to very near the outer ends of the comb teeth as indicated in dotted lines at 24 to make a closer cut, or one end may be tilted more than another so that the blade edge will occupy a somewhat diagonal position as indicated at 25 for certain uses and for best results in trimming the hair on heads of certain shapes.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description, to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hair trimming appliance, comprising a guard member in the form of a comb with handles projecting at each end thereof,
and a cutting blade fitted to slide endwise of the teeth of said comb, said blade having a push operated actuating member at each end thereof adjacent said handles whereby the blade ends may be moved independently by pressure of a finger on the respective actuating members.
2. A hair trimming appliance, comprising a curved guard member with handles at its two ends, a curved blade fitted to said guard member to be adj ustably slid thereon, and pusher members associated with the re- SPGCtlXB handles connected to move slidably the two ends of the blade independently.
3. A hair trimming appliance, comprising a guard member formed as a curved comb with handles projecting at each end thereof, and a CllIVPl- I to slide lengthwise of the teeth of said comb, said blade being equipped with ush operatedmeans at its ends and adjacent the respective handles for slidably moving at its two ends independently.
4. A hair trimming appliance, compris ing a guard member formed as a curved comb with handles projecting at the ends thereof, a curved razor blade fitted to slide lengthwise of said comb teeth, means normally holding said blade retracted, and means operable by pressure of a finger for moving said blade forward at will.
5. A hair trimming appliance, compris ing a guard member formed as a curved comb with handles projecting at the ends thereof, a curved razor blade fitted to slide lengthwise of said comb teeth, means normally holding said blade retracted, and means for moving said blade forward at will, said means consisting in separately operable pusher elements adjacent the respective handles and adapted to be pressed by a finger to move slidably the two ends of the razor blade independently.
6. A hair trimming appliance, comprising a guard member formed as a curved comb with lntt'gizll handles projecting at the ends thereof, a curved blade fitted to said comb to slide endwise of the teeth thereof, springs mounted in said handles and engaging said blade at its two ends to hold it normally retracted, and'push pins slidably fitted in said guard member adjacent said handles for engaging the respective ends of said blade to press each end forward independently.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
