CEOSSCUT-SAW SET.
Specification of Letters Extent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed July 24, 1914. Serial No. 852,372.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDISON P. MARTIN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Berry Creek, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crosscut-Saw Sets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a saw set designed particularly for use with cross cut saws and constructed for adjustment to set the different thicknesses of saws.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a saw set embodying a handle, an anvil adapted for adjustment with relation to the handle and the setting plunger arranged to cooperate with the anvil and actuated in the setting operation by a blow, the parts being constructed particularly with a view to insuring a simple and accurate setting of the saw teeth.
The invention in the preferred formof details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved saw set. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The improved saw set comprises a handle portion 1 preferably of metal mounted at one end to form a convenient hand hold and enlarged at the opposite end to provide an approximately rectangular operating section. The operating section is formed with a recess 2 opening through the lower edge of the tool, the upper wall of the recess being opposingly beveled as at 3. Secured to what is the rear wall of the recess 2 is an anvil 4, the anvil comprising a disk like member having at diametrically opposed bearing points a series of formed portions 5 for cocperation with. the teeth of different thicknesses as is usual in saw sets. The anvil is secured to the wall of the recess through the medium of centrally disposed screw 6, the anvil being formed with openings 7 to cooperate with a pin 8 projecting from the rear wall of the recess, whereby to set the anvil in any one of the suggested positions.
The opposing wall of the recess is formed with a channel 9 opening through the bottom of the wall and disposed at right angles to the recess 2, said channel having its upper end rounded and its side walls formed with guide grooves 10. A retaining block 11 is adapted to slidably cooperate with the channel being formed with ribs 12 to engage the grooves 10. The upper end of the block is rounded and the block is of such length that when in position the rounded ends form with the rounded upper wall of the channel a circular bearing 13. A plunger 14 is slidably mounted in the bearing comprising a stem 15 and driving head 16. The stem is of a size to slidably fit in the bearing and is formed on its lower side with a rod 17 to fit the depression 18 in the upper end of the block, whereby the stem is held against rotation, while the free sliding movement is permitted. The operative end of the stem is enlarged as at 19 to prevent complete outward movement of the stem, the forward face of the stem being formed with an upstanding or die face coiiperating with the anvil to set the teeth. A spring 20 is arranged upon the stem between the drive head 16 and the proximate wall of the handle member, the spring serving to normally retract the stem to its limit of movement. A screw 21 removably secures the block 11 in place, so that upon removal of said block the plunger securing means may be removed and the plunger adjusted as may be necessary.
In use, the saw held in the usual clamp is inserted between the anvil and plunger, the former being adjusted in accordance with the thickness of the saw being set. The tool is then operated by imparting a blow to the driving head 16 to give the desired set to the teeth.
WVhat is claimed. is
1. A saw set including a handle member formed with a recess, one wall of the recess being formed with an opening extending through the bottom of said wall, a block removably secured in and closing the bottom of said opening, and a plunger bearing between the upper surface of the block and the upper wall of the opening, said plunger and block being formed with cooperating guide means to prevent turning movement of the plunger with the block in place, said plunger having an operating face.
2. A saw set including a handle member formed with a rectangular head portion, said head portion having a recess opening tl rough the lower edge thereof, one wall upper Wall of the recess being formed With a longitudinal opening having its side Walls formed With channels, a guide block fitting in said opening and having ribs to engage said channels, a bolt passed through the Walls of the opening and guide block to secure said guide block in spaced relation from the of the opening, a plunger slidably mounted between the top of the block and the upper Wall of the opening, said plunger and block being formed With cooperating rib and channel to prevent independentrotation of the plunger, the inner Copies of this patent may be obtained for end of the plunger being enlarged'to prevent movement through the opening and 1 formed with an operating face, a head carried on} the outer end of the plunger, and
a spring arranged between said head and handle member to normally retract the plunger. v
