Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. STOD- DARD, of Syracuse, inthe county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear,` and exact description.
This invention relates to certain unprovements in handle attachments for brushes and other cleaning devices in which it is desirable to detach the handle from the articleor to change the position relatively thereto and com rises essentially a ferrule and clam ing head) in combination with specific attac ing elements on the article as the brush to which the clamping head is adapted to be secured.
The essential object of my present invention is to detachably clam the head, to the attaching elements on the rush by means of a wedging friction fit between such parts whereby the head and ferrule may be readily detached from the brush or reattached thereto without manipulation of either of the attaching elements. In other words, I have sought to eX edite and to simplify the attachment of the andle to the brush by a sliding wedging iit with iiXed attaching elements on said brush so that the handle may be attached to the back of any brush or similar article.
Another object is to provide means whereby the handle may be attached to said article in different positions, that is either lengthwise or transversely of the back of the brush.
Another object is to provide means for bracing the head of the ferrule and brush against relative lateral movement one upon the other when clamped to ether thereby relieving in a measure latera strain u on the' locking shoulders by which the hea is held to the brush.
Other objects and uses will be brought out in the following description.
In the drawingsnFigure 1 is a top plan of a portion of a brush and my improved handle attachment operatively attached thereto. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sectional views taken respectively on lines 2-2, 3 3 and Ll-4,- Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a top plan of the detached ferrule and clamping head. Fig. 6 is atop plan of the detached clamping plate.
In carrying out the objects stated, I provide a ferrule .-1- with an elongated substantially flat head -2- having slots -3- and 4C-.adapted to receive one or more locking or attaching elements -5- and -6-.
The ferrule -1- preferably consists of an elongated tube disposed at an angle with the plane of the plate -2- and provided with a series of elongated slots -7- to lighten it and at the same time to admit air to the incl'osed portion of the handle as -8- to prevent decaying by moisture or rather to prevent the retention of the moisture -in the ferrule allowing the inclosed portion of the handle -8-- to readily dry out. These slots -7- terminate a shortdistance from the outer end of the ferrule leaving an annulus or ring -9- which is provided with an angular slot -10- open at its outer end for receiving a locking pin --'11- on the handle 8* whereby the handle and ferrule are held from relative endwise movement when assembled. The inner end of the ferrule --1- is joined to the plate -2- by an integral reduced neck -12- at which the socket in the ferrule terminates so that the inner end of the socket is slightly tapering and affords a wedging lit with the adjacent end of the handle -8-. The head or plate -2- is provided ,with a substantially flat bottom face and tapering longitudinal edges so that its end nearest the ferrule'is somewhat wider than its opposite end. The upper face of the plate or vhead -2- is inclined from its free end toward the ferrule and is, therefore, thicker at its junction with the ferrule than at its opposite end, the top faces of the opposite sides of the slots i3- and -4- taking the same inclination so as to wedge against the under sides of the heads of the attaching elements 5v and -6-.
A circular plate -13- of metal is secured by one or more counter-sunk screws -14- to the central portion of a back -15- of the brush or other article and is provided with intersecting tapering grooves forming tapering shoulders 16- of substantially the same taper as and having a wedging lit with -the tapering longitudinal edges of the plate -2- forming lateral braces at opposite sides of the central attaching element -5- to hold the back M15- and plate 2- against relative lateral movement thereby relieving v the strain upon the attaching elements 5- and -6- and affording a comparatively broad lateral bearing for the head or plate -2-. These attaching elements -5- and --6- preferably consist of screws passed through suitable apertures in the plate 1S- and screwed into the wood back -15- of the brush as best seen in Figs,
2* and 3*, the heads of the screws being allowed to project a short distance above the top face of the plate *13* corresponding to the thickness of the sides of the slots through which they are passed so as to have a wedging fit therewith or rather with the top faces of the sides of said slots. The attaching element *5* is passed centrall through the plate *13* and also centrallyT into the back *15* of the brush, and its head is of somewhat greater diameter than the major portion of the slot *3* so as to wedge against the top faces of the side of the slot. One end, preferably the outer end, of the slot 3* is enlarged at *17* to greater diameter than the head of the screw 5* which it is adapted to receive when placing the device in operative position upon the brush. lThe slot *4* is open at its outer end and is of less transverse width than the head of the screw *6*, the distance between an enlargement *17* of the slot *3* and the outer end of the plate 2* having a slot *4* being substantially the same as the distance between the centers of the screws *5* and *6* so that in placing the device up on the brush when the outer end of the plate *2* is first passed under the head of the screw *6*, the enlargement *17* of the slot 3* is registered with the head of the screw *5* and by pressing the plate *2* and back of the brush together, the head *5* passes through the enlarged opening *17* and by sliding the plate *2* and its ferrule *1* endwise forwardly, the sides of the slots *3* and *4f* are caused to ride under and to frictionally engage the under sides of the heads of the screws *5* and *6* thereby frictionally locking the plate 2* to the back of the brush. During this operation the longitudinal edges of the plate *2* are brought into frictional engagement with the tapering flanges *16* of one of the transverse tapering grooves or guides.
In order that this handle attaching device may be arranged transversely or lengthwise of the back *15* of the brush, I provide two of .the screws *6 one in each of the narrow ends of each of the grooves which intersect each other at substantially right angles, said screws *6* being located equidistant from the center screw 5* but in lines at right angles to each other.
It is now clear that the center attaching element *5* and one of the elements *6* constitutes a set of locking devices adapted ter-locking engagement with the under side of the heads of the screws *5* and *(3* and owing to the fact that the top faces of the sides of the slots *3* and *4* are in clined rearwardly, they are wedged against the under sides of said screws thereby bringing the plate 2* into firm engagement with the plate *13* and forcing the latter firmly against the back of the brush, which together with the tapering shoulders *16* firmly locks the plate *2* and its ferrule *1* to the brush.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a handle attachment for brushes, in combination with a plate having intersecting grooves, an attaching element at the intersection of said grooves and provided with a head, and a ferrule having a tapering foot having a wedging fit in one of said grooves and adapted to fit in the other groove and provided with a slot receiving said attaching element and interlocking with said head.
2. In a handle attachment for brushes and the like, the combination with a back plate having a tapering groove, separate locking elements one in advance of the other in line with the groove, and a ferrule having a foot provided with separate slots one in advance of the other and each receiving one of the locking elements, said foot having tapering lengthwise sides wedging against the sides of the grooves.
3. In a handle attachment for brushes a backplate provided with tapering grooves disposed at substantially right angles to each other, an attaching element having a head at the intersection of said grooves, and a fer rule having a tapering foot adapted to wedge against the sides of either of the slots and its upper face engaging the under side of said head to lock the foot to the plate.
4. In combination with the back of a brush, an attaching element secured to said back and provided with an upwardly projecting head, additional attaching elements secured to said back in lines at right angles to and substantially equi-distant from the first named attaching element, and a ferrule having a wedge-shape foot provided with slots, one of which receives the first named attaching element, the other slot being adapted to receive either of the other attaching elements, said foot being wedged between the head of the first named attaching element and the head of one of the other attaching elements for frictionally locking the ferrnle to the back of the brush and preventing its y being ada ted to receive either one of the rotation thereon. l other hea s to lock the foot to the back of 5.
