DRILL-CHUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,255, dated November 11, 1890. Application filed March 28, 1890. Serial No. 345,687. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Chucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
I clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in drill-chucks, and has for its object to provide a very simple and economical device of this character which shall be of ready adjustment and very effectwe in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then be specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a chuck made in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of the chuck-head; Fig. 3, a transverse section of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: a detached perspective of the jaws in their proper relative position prior to being assembled within the chuck-head.

Ais the chuck-head having a conical-shaped recess B therein. At the top and bottom of this recess are inclined ways a Z).
G is a recess formed within the outer wall of the chuck-head, and D is a slot leading from the bottom of said recess into the way a, the floor of said recess on each side of said slot being inclined, so as to be parallel with said way, for the purpose presently set forth.
E F are the jaws, which have flanges c 01 formed therewith and adapted to fit and slide within the ways a b. The jaw E has a sink 6 in its upper face in alignment with the recess C, and f is a nut fitting within said sink. A thumb-screw G extends through the slot D within the nut f, whereby the latter may be bound firmly against the wall of the chuck- H is a pin depending from the jaw E and adapted to fit within a socket I in the jaw F, whereby said jaws are united so as to coact in synchronism. Countersinks J may be provided within the inner faces of the jaws, if desired, in order to accommodate the heel or tang of a drill. In assembling my improve. ment the jaws are inserted within the inclined. ways a b, as above set forth, and thepin H inserted within the socket I, the nut f having previously been placed within the sink e. The thumb-screw G is now driven within said nut, but not far enough to cause the latter to bind against the wall of the chuck-head, the jaws being therefore left free to slide to and fro within the ways. The jaws are caused to close upon a drill by simply forcing them backward. When the jaws are forced back, the nut f is carried against the rear end of the sink 6 and tightly drawn up against the wall of the chuck-head by means of the thumb-screw G, thereby securing the jaws as against any accidental forward displacement which would tend to spread them. When in use, the rear end of the drill abuts against the pin H, the result being a tendency to force the jaws farther back and cause them to grip the drill tighter. The nut f also acts as a stop to prevent the jaws from sliding out of the chuckhead when not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. In a drill-chuck, the combination, with the chuck-head recessed and provided with inclined ways, as described, of the jaws having flanges fitting within said ways,substantially as set forth.
2. In a drill-chuck, the combination of the chuck-head recessed and provided with inclined ways, as described, and the jaws having flanges adapted to slide freely within said ways, the rear ends of said jaws being provided, respectively, with a pin and a socket, whereby said jaws are united, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the recessed chuckhead having inclined ways, the jaws having flanges adapted to slide freely within said 50 head, for the purpose presently set forth. ways and having a pin-and-socket connection at the l'earends, the recess formedin the outer wall of 'the chuek-head anchhaving an inelined floor parallel with the adjacent Way in the chuck-head, the sink formed in the upper face of one of the jaws, the slot in the wall of the chuck-head connecting said recess and sink, the nut Within said sink, and the thumb-screw extending through said slot into said nut and having a bearing against the floor of said recess, substantially as shown 10 and for thepul'poses set forth. p
