EDWARD L. sum, or EMERSON, KANSAS.
FASTENING FOR TOOL-HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,011, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed March 1'7, 1890. Serial No. 344.154. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. SILL, of Emerson, Stafford county, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Tool-Handles. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in fastenings for tool-handles; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention adapted to secure an ax upon its handle, the parts being separated for the purposes of better illustration. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the parts shown in Fig. l in their proper place. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the spiked plate.
The tool 13 (which is represented in the accompanying drawings as an ax, although it may be of any other form) has an eye D eX- tending therethrough, the recesses cl being formed in thetool at the ends of the said eye, with which they communicate, the rear of the said recesses being open while their forward ends have beveled shoulders. (Shown at d in dotted lines in Fig. 1.)
In order to lock the handle 0 within the eye D, the plate E has the integral independout and separate spikes e projecting from the opposite ends of its forward face, the said spikes beiu g of such a size and distance apart as to be adapted to enter the recesses (Z. If theybe inserted in the recesses and the plate E be struck, they will be driven simultaneously therein to theirfull length, and their points, striking the beveled shoulders at d, will be turned toward the eye and driven into the wood of the handle, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 2. V
I am aware that priorto my invention tools have been fastened upon their handles by having pins driven in slots communicating with the eye of the tool, and that plates have been secured over the eyes of tools by means of wedges entering the wood of the handle, (a wedge being secured to the inner face of the said plate,) and I do not desire to secure either of the above constructions; but,
\Vhat I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s In a device for fastening thehandles of tools, the combination, with the 1001 having an eye extending therethrough and having recesses d therein at the ends of the said eye-and communicating therewith, of a handle inserted in the said eye and a plate having independent and separate spikes upon the opposite ends thereof projecting forward therefrom, the said spikes being formed integral with the said plate and being contained within the recesses in the tool, as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix 1n ysignature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD L. SlLL.
