To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED BUCK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saginaw, East Side, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ax-Head Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in device for locking ax-heads in position, and consists in the construction of a wedge adapted to be driven in the end of the handle or helve, having a slot therein which is bent or curved, together with a locking key wider than the wedge ada ted to be driven into the end of the hand e or helve entering the slit, all as more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through an ax-head and the helve, showing my device applied as in use; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the wedge and key. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the wedge with the locking key in place.
It is well known that it is difficult to fasten an ax-head to the helve or hammer, or other pounding or hammering tool, and my device is intended to produce a very secure holding means for such tool. While I have described it and shown it in connection with an ax, it is obvious that it is equally applicable in use with hammers, hatchets, adzes and other similar tools.
A represents or handle thereof projecting the socket in the head.
C is a wedge which may be and preferably is of cast metal, and provided with a slit D which at its.lower end has the curved portion E, or is otherwise bent from a true straight line, for the purpose to be described.
F is a locking key, preferably of thin metal and wider than the wedge, and of a length so that it may be driven into the slit D, and
an ax-head, and B lthe helve as shown into when so driven the lower portion will enter the curved or offset section E of the slit.
In use, the helve being engaged in the socket of the head, the wedge C is driven into the wood in the usual manner, and then the locking key F is arranged transversely of the wedge and driven into the slit D. The lower portion of this key will be bent by the driving operation, and enter the curved or bent portion E of the slit, as shown in Fig. 1. The locking key being wider than the wedge, it isobvious that the key will be locked or clenched into the wood upon both sides of the wedge, and thus securely hold the wedge in position and prevent the accidental disengagement of the head from the handle or helve.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a wedge slotted lengthwise, the slot being open 4at the wedge top and extending entirely through the wedge transversely, and a locking key Wider than the wedge Vadapted to be driven into the slot and helve.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a wedge slotted lengthwise, the slot being open at the wedge top extending entirely through the wedge transversely and curved at its lower end, and a locking key wider than the wedge adapted to be driven within the entire slot and into the helve adjoining the wedge.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a wedge slotted lengthwise, the slot being open at the wedge top, and extending entirely through the wedge transversely, and a flat solid locking key of greater width than the wedge adapted to be driven into the slot and the portions of the helve adjoining the wedge.
