FASTENING FOR LAST-BLOCKS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,370, dated September 16, 1851.

To all ywho/m, t may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI R. RooKwooD, of Upton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manner of Fastening the Block to Shoe-Lasts, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter 'referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together' with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.

My improved method of fastening the block to the last is represented in the accompanying drawing-which is a central, longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The block has heretofore been secured by driving a nail through it into the last, which not only renders it inconvenient when it is necessary to remove the block, but by repeated wearing renders it unfit for use.

By my improvement the block is secured to the last by a spring attached to the latter, so that it is held firmly in its place, and put on or removed without diiiiculty, while there is no danger of its being easily worn out.

In the accompanying drawing a. a represents the last, having the bent spring attached to it by means of the screws c, c.

cl cl is the block with the short wire e in the end which enters a corresponding hole in the last. A groove f f is cut in the bottom of the block of suflicient size to admit the bent spring b. Across this groove and attached to either side ofthe same, is the metallic plate or hasp g. Then the block is pressed on to the last, the spring Z) enters the groove f f between the plate g and the top of said groove, and, by its elasticity, presses down upon said plate and thus holds the block iirmly in its place. The block can be easily pulled off by means of a handle or hook placed in the hole It.

I-Iaving thus described my improvement I shall state my claim as follows:

That I claim as my invention and desire to have secured toline by Letters Patent is,

Fastening the block to a boot or shoe last by a hasp on said block in combination with a spring attached to the last as herein above described, or in any other manner substantially the same.
