UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BRADLEY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,351, dated July 25,1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmownthat I, WILLIAM BRADLEY, of
Lynn, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use Improvement in the Common Nutmeg-Grater; and I do hereby a front view of one of my improved nut the said box or holder.
meg graters. Fig. 2, is a side view of it.
Fig. 3, is a vertical, central, and longitudi nal section of it.
In these drawings A, denotes a nutmeg grater of the common form and kind, or such as isused generally for the purpose of grating or rasping nutmegs, or various other articles, its perforated, roughenedor rasping face or plate being denoted at B. Over this plate a box or holder, C, is arranged and made to slide freely from one end of the rasping plate to the other. Within this box, is a piston, disk, or plate, D, which plays freely in the box and is forced toward the grating or rasping .plate by means of a helical spring, G, which is disposed between the said disk and top, a, of The bottom of the box is open so as to admit a nutmeg when placed in the box, to be pressed close against the rasping surface of the grater by means of the spring before mentioned.
It is not absolutely essential that a disk or plate of metal be used within the box in the manner as above specified, as the spring alone may be employed in some instances, provided it be suitably formed so as to enable a nutmeg to be nearly if not entirely reduced upon the rasping surface of the grater by the successive movements of the box; it being understood that when the grater is used, it is held in one hand of a person, while he seizes with the other hand the box and rapidly moves it back and forth over the rasping surface of the grater. By the employment of the sliding holder or box and the spring thereof in connection with the nutmeg grater and applied so as to operate thereon substantially as described, I effect a very important improvement in this little culinary instrument, as I not only provide a very convenient means of holding the nutmeg (during the operation of rasping it) and so as to obviate all danger of the fingers of a person being accidentally carried into contact with the rasping surface of the grater, but I at the same time am enabled generally speaking, to more thoroughly reduce the nutmeg than it can be when held in the hand of a person and rubbed on the surface of the grater in the usual way. Besides these advantages, another is offered, it being that the nutmeg while it lasts is always in place within the box, and is therefore not liable to be lost or mislaid as when once put into the sliding box or holder it there remains until it is worn out.
What I claim as my invention is The combination of the box or holder and its pressure spring with the rasping surface of the grater, when the whole are applied and made to operate together essentially as above specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this seventeenth day of February A. D. 1854.
WILLIAM BRADLEY.
