Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN AMES, OE SAUGU S, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EDMUND BROVN.
GRATER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,422, dated October 13, 1857.
To all whom may concern.'
Be it known that I, NATI-IAN AMES, of Saugus, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Grater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2, a section showing the parts not seen in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to like parts in both figures.
The nature of my invention consists in using the periphery of a sector of a cylinder, (A, Fig. 1,) for a grater,in combination with the radial guides, D D, ofthe holder E, whereby a curvilinear, reciprocal motion is given to the substance to be grated; by means of which arrangement I obtain several advantages over most of the gratersin common use-among which are the following; viz: 1st, a convex grating surface, which is stiifer and more durable than a flat one; besides opening and presenting the holes of the grater in a more favorable manner for rasping; 2d almost all friction is avoided, except on the substance itself to be grated; and 3d its cheapness and convenience, which, I think, are greater than those of any other grater extant.
I am aware that a holder E, and follower F, are common property, having been used in a horse-radish grating machine twenty years ago; and that E and F, in combination with a spring for pressing the latter down, are found in other grater-s; I do not therefore consider' E and F independently of their combination as forming any part of my invention and improvement.
Having thus stated the nature of my in vention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a hollow box of tin, shaped as seen in Fig. 1, with a narrow opening O, at the apex or bottom, for the delivery of the grated material.
B is the convex grating surface; and is the exact arc of a circle.
C is the handle.
D D, is a brass or iron wire, passing through the box A, near its apex, and bent as seen in F ig. 2, its two extremities being soldered to the flange, e, of the holder E.
F is a wooden, or metallic, follower which may be drawn entirely out of the holder E, for inserting the material to be grated, and replaced at pleasure, being prevented from dropping out by means of the wire spring, S, which plays in a longitudinal slot in the holder E.
P is a wire passing through the box and projecting a short distance each side of it, its object being to prevent the wires, D D, from vibrating too far so as to carry the holder, E, oif of the grat-ing surface B.
Having put in whatever is to be grated, as described above, the operator takes the handle, C, in one hand, and the follower, F, in the other, and vibrates the latter over the convex-rasping surface, giving more or less pressure, as may be required; when it is obvious that the grated material will fall through the opening O. Or, if desired, the grater may be held at such an angle that the grated material will remain in one corner of the box, A, until the operator wishes to turn it out.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
Using, as described, the periphery of the sector of a cylinder for a grater in combination with the radial guides, D D, of the holder E, whereby a'A curvilinear reciprocal motion is given to the substance to be grated, substantially as set forth and for the objects specified.
NATHAN AMES. Vitnesses L. J. VIcKs, GEO. H. SMITH.
