UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MORLET, OF JERSEY CITY, NFJV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO PROSPER NORDMANN, OF NE? YORK, N. Y.
PUSH-BUTTON FOR REPEATlNG-WATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,995, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed November 30, 1886. Serial No. 220,257. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES MoRLn'r, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Push-Buttons for Bepeating-Vatches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a push button or slide-piece for actuating the sounding mechanism of repealing-watches, said slidv piece being capable of readyinsertion into the watch-case without requiring the special fitting of the parts to thesame to each individual case; and the invention consists of a push-button for repeating-watches which is composed of a slotted filling-piece of segmental shape that is soldered or otherwise attached toa corresponding recess of the watch-case center, of an exterior slide-piece having a nose for the finger, and an interior slide-piece connected to the exterior piece by a screw, said interior slide-piece being guided along a fixed are shaped arm of the main piece and acted upon by a spiral spring interposed between the supporting-socket ofsaid arm and the end of the interior slide-piece, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a repeatingwatch with my improved push-button for operating the sounding mechanism of the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the push-button shown inserted in the case and drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 2 is a side View of the push-button shown as detached from the case; and Fig. 3 isa vertical transverse sectio on line a; :c, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main or filling piece of my improved push-bntton for repeatingwatches. The filling-piece A is made-of segmental shape, and arranged to be inserted into a slot, a, of corresponding shape, which slot is arranged at any suitable point of the watch-case center, as shown in Fig. 1. The main or filling piece A is soldered, screwed, or otherwise attached to the watch case center, so as to be firmly retained in the slot of the same. The filling-piece A is-provided at its middle part with a slot, a, which slot serves to guide a screw, (2, that connects the exterior slide-piece, B, with the interior slide-piece,(), which together form the pushbutton of the repeating attachment of the watch. The exterior slide-piece,B,is provided with a projection or nose, (1, against which the finger is placed when actuating the push-button and repeating device. The inner slidepiece, 0, is provided with a perforated lug, b, at one end and guided along a fixed arc-shaped arm, f, that is attached to a fixed socket, f,of the main piece A. A spiral spring, g, is placed on the guide-arm f and interposed between the socket f and the perforated end lug, b, of the inner slide-piece, C, said spring serving to return the slidepieces B and C and the connecting-lever of the repeating attachment to their normal positions as soon as the pressure of the finger on the exterior slide-piece is relaxed. By pushing the exterior slide-piece with the finger the spiral spring g is compressed until the connecting'screw d arrives at the end of the slot c,the spring returning the slide pieces into their normal position on returning into its expanded condition.
My improved push-piece or slide-button for repeating-watehes has the advantage that it can be conveniently fastened and inserted into the centers of watch-cases without the loss of time required in attaching the parts of the push-button to the watch-case center, as was required by the practice heretofore in use.
In case any part of the push-button should get out of order, it canbe readily detached from the case,so as to be repaired in a convenient manner, without interference with the movement. \Vhen the movement with the repeating attachment is inserted into the ease, the actuating-lever of the attachment is attached in any approved manner to the interior slide-piece,O,of the push-button, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and detached from said slide-piece when the movement is to be removed from the case for repairs or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A push button for repeating-watches, con sisting of a slotted mainor filling piece, an
interior spring-actuated slide-piece, an exterior slidepieee, and a screw [or connecting said slide-pieces, substantially as set fortlr 2. A push-button for repeatirig-watches, consisting of a slotted main or filling piece, an exterior slide-piece having a projecting nose, an interior slide-piece, a screw connecting the exterior and interior slide-pieces, an areshaped guide-arm passing through the perlo rated end of theinnerslide-piece, and a spiral springloeated on said arm and acting on said interior slide-piece, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a watch-ease cen-
