Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KIHEI Korma, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVatchcases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cases, having more particular reference to watch cases, and has for its primary object the provision of novel mechanism for swinging the cover thereof to its closed position.
A further object resides in a novel provision of this type through the medium of which the case cover can be operated both to and from an open position.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a plan of a watch with the front cover thereof in open position, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, with the works removed. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through the pendant and adjacent portion of the casing. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a portion of the case cover opening mechanism, and Fig. 6 is a detail view on large scale of the operating cam.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates the case center which is. grooved for reception of a case spring 2, as usual, the said spring extending from the hinge connection 3 of the front cover 4 to the pendant 5 and being provided at its last named end portion with the cover catch 6 and with an aperture through latter the winding arbor or stem 7 carrying the push button part 8, normally projects for engagement with the winding train of the works (not shown).
The hinge section of cover 4 is provided with a lug 9 projecting into center 1 at substantially right angles to cover 4 and formed with a seat, conveniently consisting of an eye in which an end extension or resilient finger 2 of spring 2, engages for exerting yielding pressure on cover 4 for moving the same to its closed position wherein it is engaged and held by said catch 6, in the usual manner.
Reference numeral 10 indicates a curved slide member arranged in opposing relation to spring 2 and slidably engaged in the groove of the case center 1 for movement of an actuator or cam 11 thereof across the path of lug 9, to thereby be brought into engagement with the latter and through such engagement overcome the counter action of spring 2 and its finger 2, and move cover 4 to its open position.
In the present embodiment of my invention I provide a connection, as 12, between stem 7 and slide member 10 through which the latter is advanced and retracted during reverse movements of said stem, the said connection 12 comprising a hollow member consisting of opposite side walls, formed with cam slots 12 for reception of studs 13 of slide 10 and fixedly connected in suitable spaced relation by an apertured end wall 12 lying between a shoulder 7 of stem 7 and the adjacent apertured end portion of spring 2, whose aperture registers with the opening in wall 12" for reception of stem 7, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. By this construction inward movement of stem 7 through pressure applied as by the thumb, to push button 8, moves catch 6, against the action 'of spring 2, to release cover 4 simultaneously with which the connector 12 is moved by said stem shoulder 7 to impart relative angular movement to slide 10, to thereby adjust its cam 11. Cam 11 is formed to engage lug 9 throughout the opening movement of cover 4, and as it is shifted, said cam rides up a cam track 16 of case center 1 to thereby move its uppermost portion 11 which is offset with respect to the cam proper, into a suitable opening 14, provided in case center 1 and bezel 15 (see Figs. 1 and 8), so as to elevate lug 9 the required distance.
WVhen stem 7 is released, spring 2 moves the same together with connector 12, in an outward direction, thereby retracting slide 10 with its cam 11 and permitting spring finger 2 to close cover 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:
1. In a watch, in combination with a case, a cover hinged thereto, a catch for saidcover, and the push member for operating said catch, an engaging part 011 said cover projecting into said case, and a cam member supported in said case for bodily movementand connected with said push member for movement into engagement with said engaging member to thereby open said cover.
2. In a watch, in combination with a case, a cover hinged thereto, a catch for said cover, and the push stem for operating said catch, an engaging member on said cover projecting into said case, a cam member slidably supported in said case and normally engaged with said engaging member, and means connecting said cam member with said push stem for reverse movements thereby.
3. In a watch, in combination with a case, a cover hinged thereto, and a push stem, an engaging part on said cover projecting into said case, a cam member slidably sup ported in said case and connected with said push member for movement thereby into engagement with the engaging part of said cover to thereby open the latter, and means for closing said cover.

5. In a watch, in combination with a case, a cover hinged thereto, and a push stem, an engaging part on said cover projecting into said case, an actuator member slidably supported in said case for engagement with said engaging part for opening said cover, a stud on said actuato-rmember, and means on said push'stem provided with a cam opening in which said stud is engaged.
