Gas Lighter,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTOE.
LUCIEN MOSS AND VLLIAM YVILER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters PatentNo. 13,134, dated June 26, 1855.
To all wh-0m z't may concern:
Be it known that we, LUCIEN Moss and l/VILLIAM VVILER, both of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, trading together under the firm-name of VVILER & Moss, have jointly invented a new and Improved Mode of Turning On and Lighting Gas; and we do hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in making a portable instrument for at the same time turning on gas; lighting gas, and carry matches, which avoids the use of oil, spirits or fluid, of any kind, and dispenses with the necessity of filling, or any attention whatsoever. And we proceed to construct it as follows:
We take a tube A of brass or other metal the edges of which are brought just so near together as will allow a catch of metal B to run easily between them.
The catch is made, in the shape and form shown in Figures O, D, on the drawings hereto annexed, O being a sectional View, and D, a lateral View 0f the same, so that the ends of the catch a a when placed inside the tube form a sort of forceps, which will hold a taper placed therein. This tube catch for holding the taper is then inserted in a groove, cut on one side, at the end of a stick, or, rod E, of wood; or other substance. This forms the lighting part of the apparatus. A turner or wrench similar to Fig. F, of metal is then inserted into the same end of the rod E, E, as the tube is; and a boX of metal, G, or other substance incloses the other end of the rod to hold the matches.
We are aware that the taper, tube, and turner have been heretofore separately used, and therefore we do not claim lhenl.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent is The arrangement as herein described of sliding spring catch taper and wrench with the holder for the purpose set forth.

WILLIAM R. BALDWIN.
