Description
UNITE STA- ES METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING BIT-STOCKS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 16,938, dated March 31, 1857.
To all whom z5 may concern.'
Be it known that I, ABEL W. STREETER, of Shelburne Falls, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invent` ed a new and useful Improvement in Bit- Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a bit stock with joints for the `purpose of folding in smaller compass for the convenience of packing in the mechanics pocket or chest, all which will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective View, Fig. 2 is a transverse section. a
I construct my bit stock in any of the known forms with the exception of the bow, or sweep which is made in section a, a, a, in the accompanying drawings. Said section being connected by joints E, E, and supported by the sliding rings C, C, which surround said stock and, slide thereon over thev joints when said sections 'are adjusted for use. I also attach the stock cap B to the stock by means of the metal tube on box Gr,
which surrounds journal I and is so fitted f as to revolve loosely thereon. I generally make said box of acomposition of brass, copper, or other metal which produces less friction than iron. I secure box Gr, to journal I by means of nut, I-I, which is firmly attached to journal I. The stock cap B, havinga recess suflicient to receive boX G, which is secured to it by a cross pin or screw D, which passes through stock cap B and cuts box G, at D leaving journal I free to revolve in said box. It will be seen that stock. cap B is easily detached from said stock by removing cross pin D.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The construction of a bit stock in sections, said sections being connected by joints in the manner and for purposes substantially as set forth.
2. I also claim the inode of attaching the stock cap to the stock by means of the box or tube Gr, and cross pin D, or its equivalent substantially as described.
