MAB-Y E. SANBORN', OF NEWYORKyN. Y.
eannnu'r. I
I Application filed March28, 1923. Serial No. 628,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY. E. SANnonN,
a citizen-of the United States, residing at New York, county and .State of New York,
, .have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the 01 provided with button-holes or the like 25,
lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to service or protectlve garments, such as used by various 10 tradesmen, personal attendants, and professional persons, or as a garment for wear a "in doing household and similar work.
The object of the invention is to rovide a garment of the nature referre to which has a detachable front or apron-like portion of simple shape and form, easily cleaned or laundered, which receives the greater. part of the soiling and discolorations incidental to the tasksof the wearer,
v and which may be replaced from time to time by a clean front or a ron-like portion, or cleaned, and there y considerably lengthen the time the garment may be worn I in appearance.
before becoming unsightly or unattractive A further object is to rovide-a garment such as described which 1s of attractive appearance, simple construction, and well adapted for laundering.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which- Figurel is a front-view of. the garment, and v Figure 2 is a detail view of a button strip forming a part of the garment;
Referring to said drawings, numeral 10 designates a coat, jacket, or dress of any convenient form, usually made of white or other light colored material, which readily shows dirt and discolorations, so that a soiled condition of the garment is readily detected, and which may be replaced by a clean garment, to present a more sanitary and attractive appearance. This garment may be open in thefront, asindicated at 12, and closed by buttons and buttonholes 13. r
15 desi ates a front or apron-likeportion, of simple form, such as a simple flat rectangular piece of material (rubber-sheet- .ing, cloth, etc.), adapted tofb'e detachably fastened to the front of the garment 10. For fastening the apron-like portion 15 to the garment 10, the garment. is provided on each side of its front with two rows 17 and 18 of buttons or other similar fastening devices 20, a' plurality of buttons 20 being I preferably provided in each row 17 and 18, one set 23 being preferably provided at the chest-leveland another set 24 at the waist level, and the apron-like portion is greater or less height in the series 17, '18,.
the height of the apron-like a portion 15' on the wearer, may be adjusted.
.-Th'e buttons-20 aresconveniently fastened onstrips 30 detachably \arranged on the iner slde of the garment, and the buttons fastened to the garment 10 by passing through "a plurality of button-holes 31 in; said garment. The strip 30 preferably has an upwardlyextending portion ,33 which is adapted'to be fastened to the shoulder or-. tion of the garment as by means of a ut- .ton 35 and button-11016 36, said portion 33 thereby acting as a suspender for the. buttons 20, and thereby as a suspender for the apron-like portion15. When the apron-like portion 15 becomes soiled it'may be readily removed, by un-. fastening the buttons and button- holes 20, 25, 26 and cleaned, or replaced by a fresh laundered similar apron-like portion 15.. -When it is desired to wash and launder the garment 10, this may be readily done after removing the button-strips 30. The apron-l ke portion 15 may have extensions around the-Waist, or be otherwise shaped to cover desired parts of the garment 10.
While the embodiment chosen-for illustration is the preferred form of the :invention, modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, the button strip may also be'made to extend over the shoulder and down the back portion of the-garment so that the apron may be secured to the back of the garmentas well as the front. The strip may also be provided with side. extensions so that the apron may be secured to the side of the garment if desired. What is' claimed is 1. The combination ofa garment com prising a body portion having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings toward .each side of the front thereof, a longitudinally disposed strip toward each side heneath said openings, fastening devices carried by said strips and extending through said openings, and a detachable front for said garment having fastening devices toward each side thereof spaced correspondingly to the first mentioned fastening devices for cooperation therewith to permit said detachable front to be removably secured in a plurality of adjusted positions.
2. The combinationof a garment of the class described, of a detachable front or apron-like portion having means for adjustably securing the same to said garment,
said means comprising a longitudinally disposed strip on the inside adjacent each edge of the front portion of said garment, a plurality of groups of buttons on each strip extending throughsaid garment, the buttons of each group being spaced corresponding to the buttons of the next group, and button holes in said apron-like -ortion for receiving said buttons for adJustabIy securing the apron-like portion in a number of longitudinally adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 27th day of March 1923.
MARY E. SANBORN.
