UNITED STATES EDWIN F. RUSSELL, 0F JAMAICA, VERMONT.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Lettrrs Patent No. 156,041, dated October 20, 1874; application filed September 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWIN F. RUSSELL, of
' Jamaica, county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs 5 of which the followingis a clear, full, and exact description, reference bein ghad to the accompan yin g drawings making a part of this specilicaton, in Which- Figure l is a side View of my improved chair in position for use; and Fig 2 is a side View of the chair folded.
The object of my invention is to produce a chair which can be folded in the smallest space with the greatest convenience, and when required for use can be easily and readily placed in position 5 and it consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter described and explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will.proceed to eX- plain the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the backfrarne of the chair, B, the arms; G the rock ers, and D the seat. The frame A is hinged at ct to the feet A', and these feet are in turn hinged to the rockers G at c', the hinges being arranged to all the parts A A to fold as shown in Fig. 2. The arms B are pivoted to the frame A at b, and hinged to the rockers C at b', in such a manner as to allow the arms to fall back and fold with the chair, as shown in Fig. 2. The seat D is secured at its rear on the round or cross-bar c, by means of the eyes d, which allow the seat to swing freely on the cross-bar. Under the front portion of the seat I arrange the clips d', of any convenient form, for catching upon or holding the front rod or cross-bar c, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my chair is as follows: The front of the seat is raised until the crossbar c is released from the clips d. This allows the seat to move forward, while the. back and arms are allowed to fold backward, the whole chair folding into a close, compact form. To place the chair again in position for use,
it is only necessary to throw up the frame A.
This draws back the seat D until the clips d again clutch the cross-bar e, when the chair is ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The frame A and A', hinged together, as shown, and the arm B, in combination with the rocker C and seat D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
