Description

S. A. CHASE. REGLINING CHAIR.
Patented Feb. 6, 1894;
(No Modem UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH A. CHASE, OF MEDICAL LAKE, WASHINGTON.
RECLINING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,981, dated Februaryv 6, 1894.
Application filed March 22, 1893. Serial No. 467,151. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH A. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medical Lake, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reclining chairs'of that class in which provisionis made for folding parts thereof and for adjustment of others, and it has for its objects among others to provide an improved device of this character which shall embody in the one article an easy chair, a reclining and an invalid chair. I provide a limb and foot rest attachment which can be detached when desired and adjusted when in. place.
Other objects and advantagesof the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The novelty in the present instance resides in the peculiar combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in th accompanying drawings, which, with the lettors of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair with the foot rest and table attachments in position and the book rest in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the lower part of the chair. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chair with the rockers disconnected at their rear ends and the rounds separated and the parts folded.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings byletter,A designates the sides of the chair, each consisting of thetwo inclined arms or bars pivotally connected together at their points of intersection as at a in any suitable manner, the arms or bars A being extended to form the sides of the back between which is pivotally supported the back B which may be upholsteredas may be desired and which is arranged to move back and forth upon its pivots and designed to turn completely round or over if desired, and upon its back face may be a looking glass if desired.
0 are the 'side arms of the chair. They are pivotally secured at their rear ends to the side bars of the back and at theiriforward ends are detachably connected with the upper ends of the front bars of the sides of the chair in any suitable manner, as for instance by the pins 12 which are engaged in holes in the undersid es of the arms as seen. These side arms may be upholstered or not as may be deemed best.
To the lower ends of the side bars of the chair are pivotally secured the rockers D, one or both ends of each of which is detachably held in place in any suitable manner.
E are the rounds which may be each formed in two pieces connected at their adjacent ends by a pivot or a detachable connection so that they may be broken and folded when desired.
F is the seat. It is provided with a suitable frame which may be upholstered in any desired manner and this frame is pivotally supported on the side bars of the chair by pivots d which may be the same upon which the side bars are pivoted. There are slots or openings upon each side of the main portion of the seat as seen at f through which the side bars work which provides for the folding of the latter when desired. A bar G detachably connects the front and rear connecting bar of the side bars and upon this bar is supported a spring H which is arranged slightly forward of the center of the seat and upon which the said seat rests. Upon the front cross connecting bar is supported a foot rest g.
To fold the chair all that is necessary is to disconnect the side arms of the seat, break or fold the rounds upon their pivots, and disconnect the rockers at one end, when the parts may be folded into the position in which IOC they are shown in Fig. 3, the openings at the sides of the seat permitting of this movement as will be readily understood.
I is a detachable and adjustable foot and limb rest. It is provided with the side bars 1' which are slotted as seen at i and embrace the outer sides of the seat frame and they are detachably and adjustably held in position by the thumb screws 1' or other analogous means. To the front end of this foot and limb rest is carried the supplemental smaller foot rest I which is pivotally mounted on the rod or wire 1' held at the front end of the foot and limb rest, there being a space between the smaller rest and the main rest for the heels of the shoes or boots. This main rest being adjustable permits of its proper adjustment for shorter or taller people as occasion may require.
K is a detachable table attachment which is designed for use by invalids. Itis provided with spring arms k which are bent as shown and which are designed to be detachably engaged in openings Zin the plates or castings L on the front ends of the upper faces of the side arms of the chair as shown.
M is abook rest. It is carried by a-vertical arm or rod M which is rotatably supported in a suitable bearing or holder at on the outer face of one of the side arms of the chair and above the said holder is bent horizontally and thence upwardly and passed through one end of the book rest and then upward and above the rest and down through the other end of the rest and its end secured to the arm or rod at the junction of the horizontal with the vertical portion. When not in use this book rest can be turned around so as to be out of the way and as easily turned into operative position when desired.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spiritof the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new is- 1. The improved folding chair herein described, consisting of the inclined crossed side bars, pivotally connected at their points of intersection, the back held between extensions of said bars, the side arm 0 pivoted at one end to the extension of the bars, and their front ends detachably connected with the side bars, the rockers detachably held to the lower ends of the side bars, the rounds, each in two.
parts detachably joined and pivoted to the side bars, the seat frame carried by the pivots of the folding legs and the detachable bar G connecting the front and rear connecting bars of the side bars, all substantially as shown and described.
2. The improved folding chair herein described, consisting of the inclined crossed side bars pivotally connected at their points of intersection, the back held between extensions of said bars, the side arm 0 pivoted at one end to the extension of the bars, and their front ends detachably connected with the side bars, the rockers detachably held to the lower ends of the side bars, the rounds each in two parts detachably joined and pivoted to the side bars, and the detachable bar G connecting the front and rear connecting bar .of the side bars, the seat frame carried by the pivots of the folding legs, the detachable and adjustable foot and limb rest carrying a pivoted supplemental foot rest, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
