Be it known that I, EDWARD VINCENT MoCan'rH-Y, a citizen ,of the United States, and a resident of'the cityof Chicago, county ofCook, and State of IflllIlOiS, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Devices for Cleaning Floor Drains, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in a device for cleaning floor drains, and it consists, in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed. I

An object of myinvention is to. provide a. means of the character described which may be used for loosening accumulations of foreign substances in a floor drain so that the. accumulations may be forced down through the drain and through'the gooseineck trap usually provided in drain connections. I

In carrying out my invention I make use of a rigid rod 1 having a handle portion 2 at the upper end thereof and having threads 3 a e l er and, T th eads 3 p ovid means; for securing the work engaging, part of my cleaning device thereto.

'From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. My device is primarily intended for use in loosening the compact accumulation of foreign substances such as grease, threads, mud and the like which may be expected to accumulate in the drain pipe of a floor drain just in front of the gooseneck fixture 17 ordinarily employed with such drain pipe. The ordinary type of floor drain is shown in the drawing of Figure 1 at 18. An accumulation of foreign substance is indicated at 19.

The device is inserted in the drain pipe 18, as shown in Figure 1, and the handle 2 turned in a clockwise direction. This causes the teeth 11 to bite and break up the when the teeth 11 are, moved; into engage.

adjacent parts of the accumulation 19, which loosened accumulation will be forced up over the surfaces 13 of the teeth and over the boss 9 and upon the surface 6 of the disc.

Continued rotation will cause large quantities of the accumulation 19 to be broken up so that with proper flushing it may be forced over the gooseneck portion 17 and down through the drain pipe.

When the surface 6 has been entirely covered with such broken and loosened accumulation further rotation thereof will cause it to pass up over the inclined surface 16 of the projection 15 and back beneath the disc. At this time the disc should be withdrawn by movement of the rod 1 and a plunger, such as shown in Figure 5 and indicated at 20, is attached to the rod 1 by means of the thread portion 3-. This plunger 20 consists in a metal body portion 21 hav ing internal threads 22 which receive the threaded portion 3 of the rod 1 and a heavy coating of soft rubber applied to the ex posed parts of the body 21. This plunger is forced downwardly upon the loosened accumulation 19 with suflicient force to cause the accumulation to move over the gooseneclr 17 and down over the drain. Atthis time sufficient quantities of water should be poured down through the drain 18 to thoroughly flush the drain.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a work engaging member having the form of a disc with a segmental portion thereof cutaway, teeth formed on said disc and extending into the cutaway portion of the disc, said disc having a marginal wall extending upwardly therefrom, a removable handle member for supporting said disc, said teeth being constructed so as to engage with and force substances upon the upper surface of said disc when said disc is rotated, and an upwardly extending boss on said disc at that portion opposite to thetoothed portion, and an inclined sur face merging with the top surface of said above the top surface of said disc, said disc.
