I SUPPLY AND WASTE FITTING Filed May 17, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 R O T N E V m A ATTORNEY an BY I Patented June 16, 1936 SUPPLY AND WASTE FITTING Carl J. Kohler, Kohler, Wis.
Application May 17, 1935, Serial No. 22,023
14 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in waste fittings of a type adapted for use in connection with a plumbing fixture, and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a construction wherein the waste plug is readily removable without the use of tools or the necessity of loosening or removing any other parts of the assembly and, second, to provide a compact and convenient arrangement of the various parts of said fitting whereby the fitting in eifect forms an integral part of the plumbing fixture. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following disclosure.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the waste mechanism partly in section along the lines Il of Figure 2; Figure 2, a side elevation thereof, partly in section along the lines 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3, a side view of the waste plug; Figure 4, a plan view similar to Figure 1 but showing the operating mechanism in a different position of adjustment; and Figure 5, a side view, partly in section, of a lavatory with the fitting attached.
Although the invention is herein illustrated and described with particular reference to its use in connection with a lavatory, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that certain features thereof are adaptable, without invention, for use in connection with other fixtures such as bath tubs, for example, hence all mention of the lavatory herein is for the purpose of demonstrating the utility of the invention and is not intended to limit the application of the invention to use solely in connection with lavatories.
In the drawings, the numeral I indicates a lavatory, formed with an overflow housing 2, and a waste housing 3. A valve seat 4 is seated on the lavatory, extends through the waste housing 3 and is threaded at 5 for connection to the nut 6. A compressible gasket 1 is interposed between the nut 6 and the waste housing 3 to prevent leakage. The nut 6 is provided with the internally threaded skirt 8 for threaded attachment to the drain pipe 9, which is adapted for attachment to the conventional trap, not shown. The valve seat t is provided with an aperture I0 providing communication between the overflow housing 2 and the interior of said valve seat. A valve or waste plug 1 l is adapted to seat on the valve seat 4 and is provided with the apertures l2 providing communication, through aperture [0, between the interior of said waste plug and the overflow housing 2.
The waste housing 3 is formed with the bore 13 which provides communication between the interior and exterior of said housing and is constricted at It to form a shoulder or abutment.
An operating'lever, indicated generally at l5, comprises a centrally located spherical portion I6, an extremity ll extending through the waste housing 3 and engaging the waste plug H in a manner hereinafter more particularly described, and an extremity l8 extending outwardly from the waste housing and adapted to engage a lift rod as hereinafter described.
The spherical portion i6 abuts the packing l9 which is interposed between the spherical portion It and the shoulder It. It will be understood that the portion !6, instead of being completely spherical as shown, may be semi-spherical or of other configuration having an accurate surface bearing on the packing [9.
The waste housing 3 is formed with a slot 20 which, as shown, is somewhat wider than the bore I3 and extends therethrough to a point somewhat above said bore. This slot, like the bore 13, may be formed by the use of suitable cores during the casting or forming of the waste housing 3.
A nut 2|, preferably square in configuration, is inserted in said slot so that its bore registers with the bore I3. An externally threaded, tubular plug 22 extends through the bore I3 and is threaded in the nut 2!. The plug 22 abuts the packing it and. compresses it, thus insuring against leakage between the shoulder It and the packing. The plug 22 is provided with the aperture through which the extremity l8 of the operating lever extends.
A coil spring 24 is positioned within the plug 22 and at one extremity engages the head of the plug and at the other extremity engages the follower 25 which, in turn, engages the spherical portion l 8 of the operating lever. Thus the spring 24 acts to hold the spherical portion in firm engagement with the packing l9 preventing leakage and maintaining a proper position for operation.
It will thus be seen that the various parts form a compact and convenient assembly which is virtually a part of the fixture and requires no drilling, tapping or machining of the fixture to apply.
The fixture is provided a discharge spout 26 connected to a source of water supply such as a supply fitting 21. The fiow of water through said supply fitting is controlled by suitable valves, not shown. The discharge spout 26 is provided with the escutcheon 27 which overlaps the fixture and may be, as shown, integral with the spout or separate therefrom and attached thereto as desired.
An operating rod 28, provided with a knob handle, is slidably mounted in the escutcheon 21 and has pivotal connection at 29 to the bell crank lever 30. The bell crank lever 38 is pivotally connected at 3| to the yoke 32, integrally formed or otherwise attached to the supply fitting 39. A
lift rod 33 has flexible connection at 3A to the operating lever 15 and is pivotally connected at 35 to the bell crank lever 30.
Thus the waste plug ii may be raised from its seat by pushing the operating rod 28 inwardly and seated by pulling the operating rod outwardly. It will be noted that the waste plug operating mechanism is integrated with the supply mechanism and that the whole forms a compact and convenient assembly.
An important feature of the invention is the provision of novel means whereby the waste plug 1 I may be removed without the use of tools, thus rendering the drain accessible for cleaning.
In the normal operable position, shown in Figures 4 and 5, the extremity ll of the operating rod l5 extends through the waste housing 3 and through the aperture 3t in the waste plug H. It will be noted that, in this position, the operating rod I5 is in line with the centers both of the waste plug i! and the spherical portion [6 regardless of whether the waste plug ii is in a raised or seated position and that the operating rod i5 operates in a vertical plane, passing through the center of the bore i3. It will also be noted that the construction is such that the operating rod l5 naturally tends to assume this centered position upon actuation of the lift rod 33.
The aperture 36 is positioned in a groove or slot 31 extending from the bottom of the waste plug II to the aperture 35. The groove 3i may be V-shaped or of any other suitable configuration; however, I prefer the configuration shown in the drawings in which the sides of the groove, if extended, would form chords with the circumference of the waste plug, the side 38 being of greater length and of more gradual pitch than the side 39.
Instead of being provided with the aperture 36, the groove 31 may, if desired, be made deep enough to receive the operating rod l5.
In order to remove the waste plug H it is necessary only to raise the plug to its lifted position and turn it clockwise to the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. In this position it is no longer engaged by the operating lever l5 and can be lifted out directly. It may be replaced by the reverse action or the plug H may be simply replaced and the operating rod 28 actuated when, due to the tendency of the operating lever i5 to center itself as described above, the plug H returns to the position shown in Figures 4 and 5, in which position itis locked against removal, and also, the side 39 acting as a stop against further rotation in the locking direction. It will be obvious that, if desired, the construction may be such that the waste plug i l is removable upon a counter-clockwise turn instead of a clockwise turn.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a construction in which the waste plug is normally locked against removal, but may be removed by a simple turn thereof without the necessity of using tools of any kind or loosening or disturbing any other parts of the assembly. The cleaning of the drain connection is thus facilitated, since it is not necessary to remove the drain pipe or trap when the drain becomes clogged or is in need of cleaning, since these parts are readily accessible upon removal of the waste plug.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that numerous changes may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact construction herein disclosed but claim all equivalents and modifications thereof within the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.
