Description

Oct. 13,1925- 1.5 .7 W. H. HARDY PNCKERS COLLAPS IBLE PAPER HOLDER Filed Sept. 29'. 1923 Y INVENTOR MM? imp? ATTORNEY Patente UNITED STATES PATENT WILIBUR H. HARDY, or FREEWATER, oimeon;
PACKERS COLLAPSIBLE PA PER HOLDER.
Application filed September 29, 1923. Serial No. 685,605.
To'all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR H. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing, at Freewater, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packers C01- lapsible Paper Holders, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packers collapsible its objects to provide a paper holder that is paper holders and has as one of adaptable to various conditions of service.
Another object of the invention is to provide a aper holder that will remain substantial y horizontal under varying conditions thereby retaining the paper wrappers in a proper position for use.
- A further objectof the invention is to provide a paper'holder that may be accommo dated A further object of the invention is to to varying conditions.
provide a p-aper holder that is collapsible.

front side remaining open for the-With- V drawal of paper wrappers 5 that will normally rest on the plate 2.
The plate is provided with a depending lip 6 on its open side and is for the purpose of hookingonto the side ofa box 7, to be packed, and is positioned on the open side as this side must needs open on the box side as the papers are drawn. toward the ,box in Wrapping, in a manner to be explained. The lip may be a separate piece and suitably attached to the plate or may be made liBntegral therewith, as shown plainly in transportation orother purposes, the plate 2 is provided with turned edges8 designed to register with complemental turned edges 9 on theside pieces 3. Corresponding edges pieces are also provided with turned edges Sand the corners formed by the juncture of these pieces are secured by corner irons 10 which are provided with complemental edges 9 that engage the turned edges 8 of the back and sides.
- The holder is back 4 into place by means ofv the above mentioned edges, then sliding theside pieces 3 into place with their ends resting against the ends of the back so that the-back is prevented from lateral movement by the side being identical with. the edges menassembled by sliding the e g a That the holder 1 may be collapsed, for
pieces, hence is locked in place, and the corners are then joined by the corner irons 10 which are similarly moved into place, when a rigid and substantial holder is formed.
Now, by Withdrawing the corner irons, the side pieces, and the back in the order named, the holder will be collapsed and may be folded into a small package.
While this method provides removably mounted side's it is obvious that other means such as hinges (not shown) would provide for collapsing the device and hence any means of collapsing the holder coining within the scope of the claims may beused. A
On the under side of the plate is a guide 11 designed to receive either leg, 12 and 13 respectively, of an interchangeable brace 14. This brace-is formed preferably of flat material and is bent in the shape of a right angled triangle, having one of its bends 15 a right angle and the other bend at an approximate angle of 60 degrees. The ends 17 of the legs remain open so that either leg may be easily inserted in the guide, by which means the brace is made interchangeable, and with the leg l2 inserted in the guide the brace will support the holder against an inclined side of a box, and with the leg 13 inserted the brace will support the holder against a vertical side of a box.
In both cases the brace coacts with the lip 6, the latter hooking over the edge 18 of the box, as above explained, and the brace supporting the holder against the side of the box.
The end 19 of the guide is positioned back from the lip substantially the thickness of the box and to provide for insertion or withdrawal of the brace a recess 20 is cut in the lip 6 through which the brace may pass. Hence the brace may be slidably and removably mounted on the plat and may be interchanged as various conditions of service may require,
A guide 21 is also attached to the backi and provides for a needle holder 22 that is slidably and removably mounted therein.
The needle holder consists of a single wire 23 curved as at 24, and either b'en't upon itself, as at. 25, or flattened as at 26, the object. in ei'th'eror" the. latter cases being to provide a shoulder 27 Wherewith to. support one end of a spring 28, which will be presently explained, and to provide a flattened piece that will slidein the guide and at the same time prevent the needle holder from rotating in the guide.
The opposite end of the needleholder is slotted, as at 29, to receive a needle 30 and a nut 31-threadedly engages the end of the needle holder and contracts the prongs 32 and thus secures the needle in place, in the usual manner of such securing means.
The spring 28 above mentoned is provided with a loop 83 at its bottom end which loop is engaged by a tit or projecting piece 34 attached to or made a part of the guide 21. By this means a constant downward pressure is maintained on the needle 30, the pressure being suflicient to force the point of the needle through a few of the upper sheets of wrapping paper 5.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim 1.. In a paper holder, a plate, provided with depending lip on one of its sides, collapsibljy mounted sides and back pieces attached to said plates, an interchangeablebrace removably mounted on the under side of said plate and positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder removably mounted in said back.
2. In a paper holder, a holder having one of its sides open and provided with a depending lip formed on saidopen side, with its sidesslidably andremovably attached to said holder, an interchangeable brace removably attached. to thebottom of said holder and positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder removably and operably attached to one of said sides.
In a paper holder,,a holder comprising aplate, side pieces slidably mounted on said plate to form three sides therefore, a depending lip attached to one side of said plate, an interchangeable brace removably attached to said plateand positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder removably and operably attached to one of said sides,
a. In a paper holder, a holder comprising a plate, a back slidably mounted on said plate, side pieces slida'bly mounted on said plate, said side pieces positioned to lock said back in place, a lip depending from the open side of said holder, an interchangeable brace removably attached tosaid plate andpositioned to coact with said lipito support the holder, and a needle hojlderremovably and operably attachedto said back.
5. In a paper holder, a holder-comprising a plate, a back slidably mounted on said plate, side pieces slidably mounted on said plate, said side pieces positioned to lock said back in place, slidingly mounted corner irons joining the corners formed by the juncture of said back and sidepieces, a lip depending from one side of said holder, an interchangeable brace removably attached to said plate and positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder removably and operably attached to said back,
In apaper holder, a holder comprising a plate and provided with adepending lip, slidingly mounted SlClQS attached to; said plate, an interchangeable brace slidingly mounted on said plate and positioned tocoact with said lip to support said holder, and
a needleholder slidingly mounted on one of said sides.
7. In a paper holder, the combination of a holder having one of its sides open and a depending lip formed on said open side, an interchangeable brace attached to the bottom of said holder and positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder operably attached to said holder op- 1 posite to said open side.
8. In a paper holder, the combination of a holder having one of its sides open with a depending lip formed on said open side, and with its other sides collapsibly mounted on said holder, an interchangeable brace removably attached to said holder and positioned to coact with said lip to support said holder, and a needle holder operably attached to one of said sides.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILBUR H. HARDY.
