STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to self supporting or standing holders for sheets having printed matter thereon and particularly calendar pads whereby the pads are loosely supported by the holders and retained thereonwithout the use of additional fastening means, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a holder for loosely retaining calendar pads in position" for observation which is inexpensive and easy to assemble.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder whereby the readable matter on the pads may be readily observed and the holder cannot easily be tipped over from its displaying position. 1 I
Afurther object of the invention is to'provide aspace for advertising matter on the'face-of the holder without impairing the appearance of the calendar.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a holder for calendar pads whereby-the leaves containing past -months can readily be placed in the holder at the rear of thepad.
It is another object of the invention to provide a modified form of supporting base member which may be folded in contiguousrelation to the holder and adapted to be releasably retained in pad holder supporting position.
The embodiment of the invention comprises a plate having opposed grooves on a face thereof for the loose engagement of the side marginal portions of a calendar pad and an abutment'extending transversely of the face arranged with the opposed grooves to form a rectangular recessed portion with said grooves for supporting the calendar pad in viewable position, said pad. supporting plate being mounted with the recessed faceextending at an inclined angle byan angle member having one angle portion secured to the plate to form the transverse abutment, or the plate may be supported by a bail member pivotally mounted on the plate to be adjustable to lie contiguous to the face of the plate opposite the recessed face thereof and to. be extended laterally of the plate in supporting position, the bail being adapted to be locked in its supporting position. The plate supporting member may also be formed by stamping a portion of the material of the plate extending from the lower edge thereof to a point intermediate the upper and lower edges, and bending said portion rearwardly of the'plate to form an easel support.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is particularly adapted to releasably hold in viewable position a calendar C consisting of a pad of rectangular leaves connected together atone longitudinal edge, constituting the upper edge of thepad, and each leaf having arranged Lil thereon the days of a single month, as clearly shown in Figure 6. 1n the present instance the leaves are connected by aliquid adhesive applied to the edge of a compressed pack of leaves representing the calendar for a year.
The pad C is releasably and loosely supported and retained in position to be readily observed without the use of permanent fastening means by providing a metallic plate 12 having opposed marginal portions folded over in spaced relation to a face of the plate forming a pair of opposed grooves 13 with the body of the plate being of a width between the grooves equal to the widthof the calendar pad, and the space between the fold ed marginal portions and the plate being greater than the thickness of the calendarypad so that the pad may readily be engaged between the opposed grooves by a sliding movement. The pad support ing plate is adapted to be mounted so that, the face thereof arranged with the opposed grooves will extend at an inclined angle to a supporting surface to present the calendar pad in a readily viewable position.
In Figures 1 to 1, inclusive, there is disclosed one,
form of plate mounting or supporting base member comprising a sheet of metal bent to angular formation with one leg or angle portion 9 preferably of greater length than the other angle portion 10, constituting the support for the plate mounting member,.and the other angle portion 10 extending upwardly from the angle portion 9 at an acute angle. To impart stability and weight to thebase memberthe rearedge of the angle portion 9 is folded, upon itself to form a bead, as at 11. The pad supporting plate 12 is fixedly mounted on the supporting angle memberby slidingly engaging one. end of said plate with the underface of the upwardly extended portion 10 ofsaid angle member with the folded portions 13 ,oflthe plate 12 embracing theside edges of the portion 10, and said folded plate portions 1.3 clamped to the uppermost face of the portion 10, ,as at 14:, thereby securing the plate 12 to the supporting angle member. v I
The exposed area of the plate 12 extending above the base portion 10 is substantially equal to the size of the calendar pad C and the pad is sup ported in proper position on the plate between the grooves 13 by the lower edge of the pad abutting the upper edge of the base portion 10, and to prevent the leavesof the pad slipping past said upper edge of the base portion a broad edge is provided by folding over the upper edge of the portion 10 to form a beaded edge 15.
As the entire front face of the plate 12 is covered by the calendar pad it will be difficult to re-1 move the pad from the grooves 13 and to overcome this disadvantage the upper portion of the plate 12 is arranged with a cutaway portion 16 of arouate shape to permit engagement of' a finger with the rear leaf of the pad in co-operation with a finger of the same hand engaging-the front leaf of the pad.
In Figures 9 to 12, inclusive, there is illustrated another form of mounting means for the plate 12, which is cheaper to manufacture than the angle member shown in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, and which also permits the shipping of the holders in fiat condition. The mounting means shown in Figures 9 to 12, inclusive, is in the form of an easel and is formed from the material of the plate 12 by a pair of incisions extended through the bottom edge of said plate in an upwardly converging direction terminating at a'point intermediate the bottom and top edges of the plate 12 to form a tapered member 22 having the widest portion at the lower free end thereof, whereby, when it is bent at the portion connecting said tapered member with the plate 12, as at 23, said wide end will form a substantial supporting base, as clearly shown in Figures 9 and 10. The supporting member 22 can readily be adjusted to lie in the plane of the plate to permit the holder with the calendar pad thereon to be shipped in flat condition and when it is desired to place the calendar inuse the member 22 is bent at 23 and extended rearwardly to supporting position.
I In Figures 13 to 16, inclusive, the bail. form of supporting member is shown, comprising a resilient wire bent to U formation, as at 24, with the opposite ends 25 extended laterally in opposite directions to loosely engage a pair of spaced eyelets 26 on the rear face of the plate 12 formed by the material of the plate at the bottom edge thereof being cut and rolled into tubular shape, as clearly shown in Figures 15 and 16. The bail 24 may be adjusted about its pivot supports to lie contiguous to, the rear face of the plate 12, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 13, when it is desired to store or ship the calendar holder in flat condition, and also be extended laterally ol' the plate 12 to mount the calendar holder in viewable position, as shown in full lines in Figure 13. The bail 24 is adapted to be releasably retained in its adjusted positions, and inFigures 13 and 15, there is shown an arrangement, whereby the bail 24 is releasably retained or locked in both of its adjusted positions, comprising atriangularear 27 projecting from'the inner opposed end of each of the eyelets 26, the vertexof the ears being in spaced relation to the plate 12 to provide a-recess 28 intowhieh recess the opposed legs of the bail will be engaged by-the inherent tension of the material thereof when the bail is adjustedto 1ie;,contiguous to the plate 12, as shown-inFigure 15, and thelegs of the bail will abut against the outer surface ofithe ears in. its

In the embodiments of the adjustable mounting member's disclosed'by Figures-9 to 16', inclusivejthe transversely extending abutment 15 arranged on'the calendar carrying face 'of the plate 12 forthe engagement of the lower edge 'of the calendar ,pad, is formed by a rectangular plate 30 of a width substantially equal to the'width of the angle portion 19 of the angle mounting member shown "in vFigures 1f to 4, inclusive, having the upper ,edg e folded over similar to the. head 15 of saidangle portion 10 and the plate 30 being engaged in the, grooves 13 with the free edgesof the grooves clamped to the exposed faceof the plate 20, The plate 30 is, secured to the plate j 12 with a-lower edge portion of plate 30 extending beyond the lower edge of plate 12 and said-extended portion being foldedover the plate 12, as at 31, whereby the plate 30 is fixedlysecu'redto' Y gagement of a supporting surface and theother the plate 12. To facilitate the positioning and removalof the calendar pad relative to the "plate grooves 13,- there may be provided a carrier for the pad comprising a rectangular plate 17 having the edges of the plate 17 with the opposed grooves of the plate 12. r
In the embodiment of the invention disclosed by the drawings a complete annual calendarmay be kept in the holder regardless what the present month may be by inserting the used leaves containing the past months between the grooves 13 in the rear of the pad.
'I'hecalendar pad holder is used as an advertising medium and the advertising matter is prominently displayed by placing the same on the upper face of the angle portion 10 of the angle supporting member shown in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, or the plate 30 of the embodiments illustrated in Figures 9 to 16.
The holder comprising the supporting members and the grooved plate 12, is adapted to be used for displaying single cards arranged as a calendar, an announcement, or a selling price designation and when the holder is used to present a single card, the holder is arranged with a depository for a supply of cards bearing different notations thereon. The supply depository is iformed by providing the rear face of the plate 12 opposite to the face having the opposed grooves 13, with a pair of predeterminedly spaced grooves 20 similar to the grooves 13, to slidably support the cards lengthwise, as shown in Figure 2, and to facilitate the mounting of the grooves 20 on the plate 12, the grooves are-formed by folding the opposed marginal portions of a plate 21 readily secured to the plate 12 by rivets engaged in the plates. The forming of the grooves 20 integral with the plate 21 also provides a smooth even surface over which surface the surplus cards may readily slide,
The angle at which the angle portion 10 extends relative to the angle portion 9 of the base member is such to readily display the calendar or other matter being supported by the holder and also impart a low center of gravity to the plate 12 whereby the holder will not readilytip or fall over.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a holder for sheets, a base member, a plate connected to and extended at an angle from the base and having the side marginal portions bent to parallel spaced relation to the front exposed face of the plate to form opposed grooves for the loose engagement of the sides of and hold the sheets to the plate, and a ridge formed by the base memberto extend from the exposed face of the plate and parallelly and intermediately of the top and bottom of the plate to abut and support the sheets in predetermined position in the opposed grooves.
2. In a holder for sheets as claimed in claim 1, wherein a portion of the upper edge of the plate is cutaway to facilitate the engagement'of the upper 'edgesof thesheets by the fingers for the removal of: said-sheets from: the opposed grooves.

In a holder for sheets, an angular base mem ber; oneangle portion being adapted for the en-- angleportion extended in an upward direction from the supportingportion,and a plate mounted onitheupwardly extended angle portion of the base member with thegreatest area of the plate extending above-said ext-ended angle portion and arranged with opposed grooves extending from the extended angle portion to theupper edge of theplate for therloose engagement of the sides of'the sheets, thebottom' edges of the sheets abutting the upper edge of the extended angle portion of-the base member to support the sheets on theplate. e. A holder for sheets as claimed in claim 3, whereinthe upper edge of the extended angle portion of the base member is folded upon itself to form an abutment extending transversely of the plate for the engagement and support of the sheets engaged in theopposed grooves.
5. A'holder forsheets as claimed in claim 3,
wherein the angle formed by the angle portions of the base member is an acute angle to impart a low center of gravity to and prevent tipping over of the holder. g
6. In a holder for sheets, an'angular 'base member having an angle portion adapted for the engagement of a supporting surface and the other angle portion extended in an upward direction from the supporting angle portion, and a plate having a pair of opposed marginal portions folded over in parallel spaced relation to one face of the plate, one end portion of the plate being juxtaposed to the upwardly extended angle portion of the base member with the adjacent folded marginal portions of the plate embracing the opposed sides of said angle portion and clamped to the exposed face of said angle portion of the base member to mount the plate on the base member, and the folded marginal portions of the plate extending from the extended angle portion of the base member adapted to loosely receive thelateral edge portions of and hold the sheets to the plate with the sheets abutting and supported by the upper edge of the extended angle portion of the base member.
'7. In a holder for sheets, a base member, a plate mounted on the base member and having opposed grooves on one face thereof for the loose engagement of the lateral edge portions of the sheets, a ridge formed by the base member to extend from the face of the plate having the opposed grooves adapted to support the sheets and maintain them in position in, the grooves, and a pair of opposed grooves on the face of the plate opposite to the face arranged with the first mentioned opposed grooves and adapted to co-operate with the base member to support a supply of the sheets.
8. In a holder for sheets, a base member, a plate mounted on the base member and having opposed grooves on one face thereof, a carrier for the sheets comprising a plate having opposed marginal portions folded over for the, loose engagement of opposite edges of the sheets to retain the sheets on the carrier and the straight opposed edges of the carrier plate adapted to slidably engage the opposed grooves of the first mentioned plate, and a ridge formed by the base member to extend from the face of the first mentioned plate having the opposed grooves for the engagement of a folded marginal portion of the sheet carrying plate and support the carrier on the first mentioned plate in the opposed grooves thereof.
. 9. In combination with a calendar consisting of a pad of leaves, of a holder therefor comprising a base member and a plate extended from the base member at an angle thereto and having the outer exposed face thereof arranged with a recessed portion opened at the upper edge of the plate for the loose engagement of the calendar pad to support and hold thecalendar pad to said face of the plate.
10. In a-holder for sheets, a plate'having a face arranged With opposed grooves for the loose engagement of the sides of the sheets to hold the sheets to the plate, an abutment secured to the face of the plate to extend transversely of the grooves for the engagement of the lowermost edges of the sheets to support the sheets in the grooves, and a member stamped from the material of the plate extending from the bottom edge thereof to a point intermediate the top and bottom edges and said member being adapted to be bent at the juncture thereof with the plate in a direction rearwardly of said plate to support the plate in inclining position.
11. In a holder for sheets, a plate having a face arranged with opposed grooves for the loose engagement of the sides of the sheets to hold the sheets to the plate, an abutment secured to the face of I the plate to extend transversely of the grooves for the engagement of the lowermost edges of the sheets to support the sheets in the grooves, and a resilient member of bail formationpivotallyv mounted on the face of the plate opposite to the face arranged with the opposed grooves and adapted to be releasably retained in position in contiguous relation to the adjacent face of the plate and in position extending laterally of the plate to support the plate in inclining positionand present the sheets to view.
12. In a holder for sheetsas claimed inclaim 11, a pair of eyelets formed from the plate in spaced and alined relation on the face ofthe plate opposite to the face arranged with the opposed grooves and each eyelet having a recess in the opposed ends thereof spaced from the plate, and the bail shaped member having the opposite ends bent laterally in opposite directions to be loosely engaged in the eyelets and said member adapted to be positioned relative to the eyelet recesses to be retained in adjusted positions.
13. Ina holder forsheets, a plate having the side marginal portions bent inwardly to form opposed grooves for the loose engagement of the opposite sides of the sheets, and a second plate having the opposite ends engaged and secured in the grooves with an edge of said second plate extending transversely of the first plate to form an abutment and support for the bottom edges of the sheets engaged in the grooves.
