OJcar W Klann W/TNEJJESIA Patented Sept. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES oscAa w. KLANN, OFMILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
LID HOLDER FOR CIGAR BOXES.
Application filed September 6, 1924,. Serial No. 736,324. i
To all whom it may) concern. 1 i Be 1t known that I, OSCAR KLANN, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at the.
city of Milwaukee, in the county of Mil- 5 waukee and State of VlSCO11Sl11,l1ELVG invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid Holders for Cigar Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in such lidholders, whereby the lid of a cigarbox may be held open and fixedly in place relative to the sides thereof, either when the lid is opened from its hinge, on the rear edge of the rear side of the box, or when the lid is removed from such hinge and fastened against the outer surface of the rear side of the box, by means of several of the lidholders, one of which is attached to either of the lateral sides of the box, and to the part of the cover adjacent to the same. Thereby, is achieved a convenient means for handling the box and itscontents, and for displaying the trademark and the price of the cigars,
usually upon the inside of the lid. Lack ofvertical space in a show-case wherein boxes of cigars are displayed, demands a device whereby the lid of a cigarbox may be removed from its hinge and thus fastened a desired distance below the upper, rear edge of the box. By removing a desired portion of the lower part of a lid, as much of the up per part of the lid as is desired may thus be displayed above the upper surface of the rear side of the box.
I attain these objects by the mechanism explained in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is, a view in perspective of the lidholder as applied to one of the lateral sides and the lid of a-cigarbox; Figure 2 is 0 a View in perspective of the lidholder in the same position, illustrating all parts of the lidholder, without the interposition of any parts of the cigarbox; Figure 3 is a plan, or
top view of this lidholder, applied to one of the lateral sides and the lid of a cigarbox,
and Figure 4 is a lateral view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout these several views.
The clamp, A, of the lidholder is adapted to engage part of the outer, top and inside surfaces of one of the lateral ends, B, of a cigarbox nearest the lid, X, thereof; the
flange, f, of said clamp, A, being on the outside, the horizontal shoulder, 8, thereof on M the top, and the fl ng 5, hereof onthe in? iidesurface of such sidewall, B, of a cigar The vertical shoulder, S, of this lidholder is preferably integral with, or connected to said flange, f, of said clamp, A, by the flanges, m and a. This shoulder, S, is adapted to engage part of the outer. surface of the lid, X. The flange, m, is ada'ptedto engage the adjacent I The curl, O, is preferably formed by curling over a lug from the body offlsaid flange,
m. In the curl, O, is rotatably held the axial A, the inner surface of the end, B, of the box.
My lidholder is attached to a cigarbox' in the following manner. With the lever,L, rotated to the position shown by the dotted lines in Figures2and 3,. the shoulder S, and the flange, m, of the device are placed in position upon the rear surface and adjacent lateral edge of the lid, X. The clamp, A, is then applied to the side, B, of the box, with its flange, f, on the outside surface, its flange, i, on the inside surface and its horizontal shoulder, s, on the top surface thereof. The spring lever, L, is then revolved into the position where the claw, o, of the upper, short arm of said lever will firmly engage the inner surface of'the lid, The claw, o, of the lower, spring arm, a, of this lever, L, is then pressed through the opening, h, in the flange, i, of said clamp, A, into the adjacent, inner surface of the side, B, of the box. One of the lidholders is sufficient to hold the lid, X, open and in fixed position relative to the box, so that the same may be used for conveniently handling the box and its contents when the lid is hinged to the box, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings.
As already stated above, when desired, to
save vertical space in a show-case wherein the box and its contents are to be displayed, the lid may be removed from the edge of the box where hinged. The lid is then attached the outer surface of the rear side of the part of the lateral edge of said i I c5 box by means of two of the lidholders, the one onthe left side, constructed and attached to the lid and the lateral endof the box on that side, as illustrated in the drawing herewith, the other, similarly constructed, but of the opposite hand, is attached to the lid and the right hand, lateral-end of the box, as will be apparent Without further explanation. When the lid is so removedfrom its hinge on the box, any desired portion of the lower part; of the lid may be out off, or otherwise removed, and the remaining upper part'of the lid, which displays the trademark' and price of the contents of the box may then be firmly clamped against the outer surface of the rear side of the box. This is done to reduce still further the vertical space occupied by the boxwith th'elid so attached thereto;
I am aware that prior to my invention, lidholdershave been rhade for engaging" the lateral ends-and the lid of cigarboxes. I, therefore, do not claim such a combination broadly; but,
'I claimc 1. In lidholders for cigarboxes, a vertical member, having the shoulder, S, adapted to engage the outer surface of the open lid of a box, the flange, m, adapted to engage part of the surface of the adjacent, lateral edge of the lid, the curled extension, 0, of said flange, m, the flange,- n, adapted to connect said flange, m, with the vertical flange, f, of the horizontal member, A, having said flange, f, the shoulder, s, and the flange, 6, adapted to-engage, respectively, part of the outer, top and; inside surfacesof the adjacent end of the box, in combination-with the spring lever, L, the vertical part of which is oscillatably mounted in axial relation-within said curled extensiomO, of said flange, m, said spring lever, L, having two claws, the upper one, 0, adapted to engage the inner surface of thelid, the other, 0, at the lower extremity of the spring lever arm, a, adapted to engage the inner surface of the adjacent side of the box, all substantially as hereinabove described and as illustrated in the drawing herewith.
2. The combination, in lidholders for cigarboxes, of a vertical member having the shoulder,- S, adapted to engage part of the outer surface of the open lid of a box, the
flange, m, adapted to engage part of the surface of the adjacent, lateral edge of the lid,
the curled extensionfO, of said flange, m, the flange,- n, adapted to connect said flange, m, with the vertical flange, f, of the horizontal member, A, having said flange, f, adapted to engage the outer surface of the adjacent end of the box, the horizontal shoulder, 8, adapted to engage the top surface of said end of the box, and the flange, i,which has the opening, 78, therein, adapted to engage the inside surface of said end of the box, with the spring lever, L, the vertical part whereof is oscillatably mounted in axial relation within said vertical curled exten-- sion, 0-, of said flange, m, said spring lever, L, having two claws, the upper one, 0, adapted to engage the inner surface of the lid, the other, 0, at the lower extremityof the spring lever arm, a", adapted to'engage the inner surface of the edge of the box through said opening, h, in said flange, i, all substantially as illustrated and .described herein. s
OSCAR RLANN.
