Application filed April 14, 1923. Serial No. 631,978.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known-that '1, JOHN E. SHUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ubly, in the county of Huron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Rim Expanding and Contracting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tire rim expanding and contracting tool and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character stated which may be easily and quickly applied to a wheel rim and which may be conveniently used for spreading the ends of the rim, for drawing the ends of the rim toward each other and for moving the ends of the rim laterally with relation to each other.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the tool showing the relative position of the parts thereof when the tool is to be used for spreading the end portions of a wheel mm.
Figure 2 is similar view with parts broken away and showing the relative position of the parts of the tool when the same is about to be used for moving the end portions of the rim out of alignment with relation to each other.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view of the tool out on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Eigure 4 is a side elevational view of the tool showing the relative positions of the parts when the tool is about to be used for drawing the ends of the rim toward each other.
The tool comprises arms 5 and 6. Rim clamping members 7 are pivotally mounted upon the arm 5. Rim clamping members 8 are pivotally mounted upon the arm 6. The clamping members 7 are provided with rim engaging jaws 9. The clamping members 8 are provided with pivoted rim engaging jaws 10. Bolts pass transversely through the clamping jaws and nuts 17 are screwed upon the bolts 15 whereby the said jaws may be moved toward each other and clamped upon the whee-l rim A as indicated in Figure 3 of the drawing. The arm 5 is provided at one end with a series of teeth 12 which are adapted to engage the surface of the wheel rim when the tool is applied. A
handle lever 26 is pivoted upon the arm 5. The handle lever 26 is provided with a series of-spaced perforations 32. A pin may be inserted in" any one of the openings 32. The arm 6 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 36 having at its opposite end laterally disposed recesses 37 and 38 and provided at a point between its ends with a laterally disposed recess 39, the said recess 39 being disposed at the opposite side edge of the slot from the recesses 37 and 38. The slot 36 and the recesses thereof are adapt-ed to receive the pin 35 whereby the handle lever 26 is pivotally connected with the arm 6 at either end of the slots 36 or at a point between the ends thereof as desired or required. The arm 5 is provided at one end with a laterally disposed lug 39 having an opening which may receive a pin 40 and the said pin 40 may pass through one of the openings provided in the handle lever 26 whereby the arm 5 may be fixed with relation to the handle lever 26 as best indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing.
In applying the device to a rim, the clamp members 8 may be placed upon the rim at any suitable or desired distance from the end thereof and the said clamp members may be shifted upon the rim from one position to another during the operation of expanding or contract-ing the rim as desired or as required and whereby the pins 35 mounted v upon the handle lever may enter the intermediate recess of the slot or either one of the end recesses thereof. hen the clamping members are in engagement with the rim, the handle lever may be swung laterally of the rim, that is in a plane rectangular to the plane of the rim whereby the arms 5 and 6 are swung upon their pivots and then the lever 26 may be given a twist and the ends of the rim are moved out of alignment with each other.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing and the tool is applied to the wheel rim, the end portions of the rim will be spread apart or moved away from each other when the free end portion of the handle lever 26 is swung toward the clamp members 8. hen the parts of the tool are arranged as shown in Figure 2 and the tool is applied to the wheel rim, movement may be imparted to the handle lever 26 whereby the arms 5 and 6 are rocked upon their pivotal connections with the clamping members 7 and 8 and thus the end portions of the Wheel rim may be .moved out-of alignment With each other. When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 4: of the drawing and the tool is applied to the Wheel rimthe ends ofthe Wheel rim are drawn together or toward each other When the free end of the handle lever 26 is swung toward the olamping members 7.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as. new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A tire tool comprising a pair of clamp members, an arm hingedly connected With L one of the clamp members and-arranged to swing transversely With relation to the said clamp member, the said armbeing provided at one end with aseries of teeth,-,-a lever adjustably mounted upon the lever, an arm hingedly mounted upon the other clamp member and arranged to swing transversely thereof, the last mentioned arm being provided with a substantially longitudinally disposed slot adapted to receive said pin, and the last mentioned arm being provided at the edges of the slot with recesses also adapted to receive said pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN E. SHU'BERT.
