Description

W. O. BERRY I"BEAM HANG ER Filed July 30, 1925 AVIrme,
MHZ:
\nnnnmnnnsi Patented Apr. 13, 1926.
UNITED sTATEs WILLIAM: O. BERRY, OF CARO, MICHIGAN.
V I-BEAM HANGER.
Application filed July 30, 1925.
To all whom it may concern-L Be it known that \VILLIAM O. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caro, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Beam Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a grapple or hanger for use in handling I beams and other structural parts.
It is aimed to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive construction which particularly may be operated readily and expeditiously without the use of a wrench or other tool.
Another object is to provide an attachment for selective use to enable a better ongagement with beams of a certain form or forms. I
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of,
the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view of the grapple in side elevation and as suspending a channelbeam;
Figure ple Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
-Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 but with the device suspending an I beam; and
Figure 5 ure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, is a ring on which two jaws 11 are loosely hung by meansof eyelets 12. The lower ends of the jaws are formed into downwardly converging suspending portions 13 which may engage one flange lt of an I beam 15 as in Figure 4:. v.
An endless shackle 16 surrounds the jaws and is pivotally mounted on one of them by means of a strap 17 A screw 18 is threaded in one cross arm of to be screwed against the adjacent jaw in order to force one jaw toward the other and grip the beam 15 or other article. An operating lever 19 is pivoted at 20 to the screw 18 and is operable in lieu of a tool to turn the screw so that a tool is not necessary and the device may be operated quicker.
2 is a front elevation of the grapis an elevation reverse to Fig-' the shackle and adapted Serial No. 47,098.
.It is to be noted that the screw 18 may seat in any one of a series of notches 21 provided in the adjacent jaw which materially assists in preventing slippage of any of the parts.
In use, it will be understood that two of the shackles will be used on each beam or the like and that the rings 10 thereof will be connected by a chain or the like in turn suspended by the hoisting or handling app aratus.
In some instances it is preferable to use a clamp plate 22 as shown in Figure 1 since it has an angle portion 23 disposed at a right angle for instance to and may coact therewith in securing a channel beam or the like 24 in place, Clamp plate 22 is subject tothe pressure of the portions 13 and is held removablyin place as by means of a set screw 25 which passes loosely through one of the jaws and is threaded into the plate.
Various changes may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described having complemental jaws, a clamp plate carried by one of the jaws, and said plate having a ortion deflected relative to one of the jaws for the purpose specified.
2. A device of the class described having complemental jaws, a clamp plate on one of the jaws, said jaws having angle suspending portions between which said plate passes, and said plate having an angle portion at substantially a right angle to and coacting with one of the first mentioned portions.
the adjacent portion 13 3. A device of the class described having v complemental jaws, a clamp plate on one of the jaws, said jaws having angle suspending portions between which said plate passes, and said plate having an angle portion at substantially a right angle to and coacting with one vof the first mentioned portions, a suspending element connecting said jaws, a shackle pivoted to one of said jaws and surrounding the jaws, a manually operable clamping screw carried by the shackle and engageable against one of the jaws, and the latter jaw having a series of notches to selectively receive the binding endof the screw.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
WILLIAM O. BERRY.
