:.PLIEBSI i Application. filed J'uly 29',

. To'raZZ whom t may concern.'

' Be itkn'own that I, VENNIE JACOBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulda, in the county of Murray and State of Minnesota, .have invented certain new do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled 'in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

'My invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient pair of pliers that are easy to operate and hold closed while gripping an object, and to this end the invention consistsV of the noveldevices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, likevcharacters in` dicate like parts throughout the sevjeralviews.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating the improved pliers closed;

Fig. 2 is a view corresponding towFig. 1 with the exception that the pliers are open and certain parts broken away;

Fig. .3 is a transverse section the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 4 is a detail view in section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

The improved pliers comprise a vpair of jaws 5 and a pair of handles or levers 6. The jaws 5 are hollow with the exception of openings in which the handles 6 work, and are pivotally connected at 7 between said handles. In the free or outer end portion of the jaws 5 are secured jaw facings 8 rigidly secured in position by rivets' 9and have at their outer ends, contacting grip`v ping surfaces 10. Inward of these surfaces 1() the jaw facings 8 are provided with tooth-equipped concave gripping surfaces 11. These jaw facings 8 are also provided with internal convex cam surfaces 12 which extend substantially parallel to the gripping surfaces 11.

The handles 6y are pivoted at 13, one to each ofthe jaws 5 inward of the gripping surfaces 11 and to ears laon the jaw faeings. Said handles 6 are provided with claws 14 in crossed relation. Y Said claws 14 are provided with concave surfaces 15 1,922. v,serial No. 5778,43?.

which rest upon the convex cam surfaces "12 1 `with freedom forlsliding movement thereon during the opening and closing move` ment of the jaws 5.- A leaf spring 16 1s se- Y e cured to the outer'edge portion of each'l hanand useful Improvements in Pliers; and I yI dieG, extends with lthe respective jaw 5, and'y bears against the inner,l wallrthereof.

yrlhesesprings 16 are underj strain to open the jaws 5.-'

"The jaws 5, from'itheir pivots totheir outer ends, are relatively long so thattheir"j co-operatinggripp'ing surfaces 10 and 11 have substantially parallel movement during the opening andrclosing movement of the jaws 5. The relative arrangement of the pivotal connections between the handles 6 and the jawsk 5 and the action of the.

claws 14 on said jaws make a very powerful pair of pliers. After an object has been gripped by the pliers and affords fa base of reaction, the pliers may be held closed'by simply taking hold of the 'outer- 'most handle, in respect t0 the direction of the movement of the pliers tending to turn said object, and drawing said handle inV said direction." It will thus be seen that the pliers may be easily held gripped onto an object without any effort on the part of a mechanic so that` liemay give his entire attention to work being performed with his other hand. v

The improved pliers are especially well adapted for use while workingy on an automobile, and in actual usage have proven highly efficient for the purpose had in view.

VVIt is, of course, understood that theY gripping surfaces of the pliers may take variousr different forms. 'Y What I 'claim is: V

1. A pair of pliers comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, and a pair yof handles, one of said handlesbeing pivoted to'one of saidrjaws and having a claw` engageable with a lcam surface on thev other jaw for closing the jaws.

2. A pair of pliers comprisinga pair of pivotally connected hollow jaws, and a pair of handles, one of said handles being pivotally connectedwithin one of said jaws and having avrclaw working in the other `jaw and engageablewith a cam surface formed vthereon for closing the jaws.

3. A pair of pliers comprising a pair of pivotally connected hollow jaws, and a pair of handles, one of said handles being pivotally connected within one of said jaws Vand having a claw extending into the other jaw and engageable with a convex cam surface formed thereon for closing` the jaws.

et. A pair of pliers comprising' a pair of' pivotally connected jaws7 and a pair of handles pivoted, one to each of said jaws, Said handles having claws engageable with oain surfaces on the opposite jaws from which they are pivoted for closing the jaws.

5. A pair of pliers comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, each of which is provided with a convex caniA surface., and a pair of handles pivoted, one to each of the jaws and provided with claws having concave surfaces engageahle with the conveX cam surfaces on the opposite jaws from which the handles are pivoted lor closing the jaws. j

6. A pair of pliers comprising a pair of pivotally connected hollow jaws having contacting` surfaces at their outer ends, tooth-eqnipped concave surfaces inward of said contacting surfaces, said jaws also having convex internal cam surfaces which extend substantially parallel to said toothequipped surfaces, and a pair of handles pivotally connected, one Yin each of said jaws and having claws with concave surfaces engageable `with the convex cam surfaces on opposite jaws from which the handles are pivotedfor closing the jaws.'

7. The structure defined in claiin 6 in which each of said handles is provided with a spring engageable with the jaw to which the respective handle is pivoted Yand under strain to hold the jaws open.

ln testimony whereof I aix my signature.'
