DETACHABLE EXTENSION CLAMP.
Application filed August 26, 1924. Serial 1%. 734,308.
To all whom it may concern:
able others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same;
This invention relates to carpenters clamps, and has for its primary object the provlsion of a novel devlce of this character which shall be adapted to hold in assembled relation units of work varying in width from a fraction of an inch to several feet, which shall be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be readily taken apart so that the parts thereof may be compactly arranged for storage.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter 'fully described and ,clalmed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
- wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the clamp applied .to a comparatively narrow v Figure 2 is abottom plan view of; the clamp,
Figure 3 is a'view in side elevation of the clamp applied toa comparatively wide unit of work,
Figure 4 1s a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure '1, Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1, I
Figure 16 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 1,
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation of the clamp applied to a unit of work with the bracket and pressure screw removed,
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view, illus tratinga slightly modified form of the intermediate bar section, and -F-igure 9 is a detail trating the formation of the openings in the aws and bracket of the clamp.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates the bar of my 1m.
proved clamp. The bar is of sectional sectional view illusformation, and itembodies terminal sections 2 and 3 and an intermediate section 4. The
sections 2, 3 and 4 areadjustably connected together so as to permit the length of the bar 1 to be increased or decreased, they may be of any desired length, and they'may be of the same or of different lengths. The terminal sections 2 and 3 areof hollow U-shapcd formation in cross section, and the intermediate section 4 is of solid U-shaped formation in cross section. The intermediate section 4 has a snug sliding 'fit within the terminal sections 2 and 3 to prevent the sections from having any relative lateral or.
twisting movements. These parts are pro vided with longitudinal rows of openmgs 2 3 and 4, respectively, to permit them to be secured in the required adjustedvposition by pins 5. Jaws 7 and 8 are slidably mounted upon the terminal sections 2 and 3, respectively, to permit them to be relatively adjusted. The jaws 7 and 8 are provided with rows of openings '2" and. 8, respectively. These rows of openings are in aline- .ment w1th.the rows of openin s 2" and 3.
Thejaws 7 and 8 are secured in adjusted position by pins '9/passing'through registering openings in the jaws and terminal sections. Thepins 5 pass through registering openings in the terminal sections 2 and 3 and'the intermediate section 4. The pins 9 are secured to their respective jaws by flexible elements 10 so as to prevent them from being misplaced or lost. A" bracket 11 is slidably mounted upon the terminal section 3 outwardly'beyond the jaw 8- for adjustment with respect to this jaw. The bracket 11 is provided with a row of openings-ll arranged in alinement with the row of openingsfi, and it is secured in adjusted position by a pin 12 passing through a registering pair of these openings. Thispinis secured to the bracket. ll by a flexible element 13 so as to prevent its misplacement or loss. A pressure screw 14 has threaded connection with the bracket 11, and it is provided at its inner end with a swivelled head 15 for contact with the jaw 8,, and at its outer end with'a hand wheel 16.
As the sections 2, 3 and4 of the bar 1 are connected together for relative endwise adjustment, as the jaws 7 and 8 are mounted upon the bar for relative adjustment, and as the bracket 11 is mounted .upon the bar for adjustment with respect to the jaw 8, it should be apparent that the clamp may be the distance between these parts is slightly greater than the distance between opposite edges or sides of --the unit of work, and the jaw 7 secured in adjusted position by its pin- 9, the clamp is applied to the unit of work with the jaw 7 in contact with one edge or side thereof. The pressure screw 1 11 is then turned up until the parts of the work are under the desired pressure, after which the jaw 8 is secured against movement on the'bar 1 by its pin 9. If desired, the bracket 11 and pressure screw 14 may now be removed and used in connection with 1 is shown in Figure 8, and this section 4:.
differs from the section 4 in that it is of hol- .low U-shaped formation. In practice, the clamp may be equipped with an intermediate bar section of solid U-shaped formation in cross section, as clearly shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, or with the hollow U-shaped inter mediate section shown in Figure 8.
In Figure 9 the formation of the bar receiving opening 7 in the jaws 7 is illustrated. By reference to this figure, it will be seen that the end walls 7 of the opening are inclined in opposite directions in order to permit the jaw to be readily moved along the bar 1., The openings in the jaw 8 and bracket 11 are similar to the opening 7.
It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
\Vhat is claimed is 1 v 1. A clamp comprising a bar embodying terminal sections of hollow U-shaped formation in cross section and an intermediate section of solid Ueshaped formation in cross section, the intermediate section-being received by the terminal sections slidably to permit the length of the bar to be varied, means adapted to secure the sections against movement with respect to each other, jaws another clamp comprising bar sections 2,: carried by the bar, a bracket carried by the 3 and 4, and the jaws7 and 8.
bar,- and a pressure screw carried by the bracket.
2. A clamp comprising a bar embodying adjustably connected sections, certain of said sections being of hollow U-shaped formation in cross section and the other section being of solid U-shaped formation in cross section, means securing the sections in adjusted position, jaws mounted upon the bar, a bracket mounted upon the bar, and a pressure screw carried by the bracket.
3. A clamp comprising a bar embodying adjustably associated terminal and intermediate sections of U-shape in cross section, the members of the. terminal sections being hollow to receive the intermediate section', means for securing the sections'in adjusted position, 'aws mounted on the bar, a bracket mounte on the bar, and a pressure screw carried by the bracke In testimony whereof I' aflix my'signature,
. BENJAMIN W. SEELY.
