H. D. GOLDSMITH.
Portable Posts for Tents, &c.
N0,]55,235 Patented Sept.22,1874.
WITNESSES: w I "TOM W 77114 1 1 r (U f n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. GOLDSMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE POSTS FOR TENTS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,235, dated September 22,1874; application filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, HENRY D. GOLDSMITH, 1f the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Posts for Tents, Wagon- Tops, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved post arranged for use as a tent-pole, and parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the cap, taken through the line as :10, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved portable post for supporting tents, awnings, &c., which shall be so constructed that it may be readily set up and taken down, may be compactly packed for storage or transportation, and, when in use, will support the tent, awning, or top securely.
The invention consists in the tubular sectional post made in two parts, the upper part of which is made of such a size as to fit into the lower part, and with an enlarged lower end, to fit upon the upper end of said lower part; in the combination of the sleeve, the pivoted stakes, and the pivoted slotted plates, with the tubular sectional post; and in the COII'lblllZttlOll of the cap, the clamp, the hinged bolt, and the armed plate, With the tubular sectional post, as hereinafter fully described.
A and B are the two parts or sections of the post, which are made tubular, and of such sizes that the upper part, B, may be inverted and passed into the other part, A, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the upper part, B, is enlarged to receive and fit upon the upper end of the lower part, A, when extended for use, as shown in Fig. 1. O is a short tube, of such a size that the lower part, A, may fit into it, and of such a length as to furnish a firm bearing for said post. Upon three sides of the tube or sleeve 0 are formed three pairs of lugs, to which are pivoted the upper ends of three stakes, D, the lower ends of which are sharpened, to enable them to be readily forced into the ground. E are plates, which have slots formed through them for the passage of the lower ends of the stakes D, and have lugs formed upon their upper sides, upon the opposite sides of said slots, to receive the pins by which the said plates are pivoted to the said stakes. The plates E limit the depth to which the stakes can enter the ground, and at the same time adjust themselves to any unevenness of the surface of the ground. Upon one side of the sleeve (J is formed a projection, 0 through which passes the set-screw 0 for securing the said sleeve to the said post. The projection c is notched upon its upper and lower ends, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to-adapt it to serve as a belaying-cleat, for securing the cord by which the tent or awning is raised to its place. I is a cap-socket, fitting upon the upper end of the part B of the post, and the top of which is made flat, to adapt it to serve as part of a clamp. Upon the opposite sides of the top of the cap I are formed lugs, to one of which is hinged a plate, J, to serve as the other part of the clamp. The opposite edge of the plate J is notched to receive the bolt K, the base of which is pivoted to the other lugs of the cap I, so that, when the bolt K is turned up and its nut screwed down, the plate J will be firmly secured to the cap I. In the adjacent faces of the parts I J are formed notches, to receive the arm L of the plate M and hold it securely. The frame of the tent or Wagon-cover, which may be the device described in Letters Patent N 0. 147,319, issued to me February 10, 1874, or any other suitable eover, is secured to the plates M by screws or any other suitable means. The cap I is provided with a pin, 0, for securing it to the end of the part B of the post.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the sleeve 0, the pivoted stakes D, and the pivoted slotted plates E with the tubular sectional post A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the cap I, the clamp J, the hinged bolt K, and armed plate L M with the tubular sectional post A B, substanas herein shown and described.
HENRY D. GOLDSMITH.
