PEDESTAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24:, 1912.
Application filed December 9, 1911. Serial No. 664,900.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES L. E. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at; Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Pedestals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to; which it appertains to make and. use the} same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and. to the letters and figures; of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to pedestals and more particularly to a pedestal having a revoluble top; the principal object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which is of light weight but of substantial strength, and which may be taken down and assembled compactly for shipping or storing.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a pedestal having roller bearings for supporting the revoluble top in order that such top may be freely movable.
In accomplishing these objects I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a pedestal constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a perspective view of the upper portion of same, the revoluble top being removed. Fig. III is a cross section of the upper portion of the pedestal including the top. Fig. IV is a perspective view of one of the leg sections. Fi V is a perspective view of the mortise jolnts of the leg sections, the parts being separated for better illustration.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a leg section comprising a head 2 and leg strips 3, the latter belng preferably made of flexible material and secured together at their lower ends; the upper end of the inner strip being curved inwardly and seated in a mortise 1 in the under face of the head and the upper end of the outer strip being extended over and secured to the outer end of the head 2, a part projecting above the head as illustrated.
Fixed to the top of head 2 are blocks 5, which are spaced at the center to provide a socket 6 and have concaved sockets in their outer ends opening through the tops of the blocks. When the blocks are in place, the outer ends of the sockets are covered by the the socketend. Located within each of said sockets is a roller 7 which is revolubly mounted on a pin or nail S that is extended through the leg strip and socket into the block 5. The mortised section of the head 2 is provided with a central aperture 9 and with sockets 10, and the lower ends of the leg sections are connected by a rung 11.
12 designates the other leg section, which comprises a head 13 having a central aperture 1 1 and depending posts 15 adapted for registration with the aperture 9, and projection into the sockets 10 in the first leg section, when the parts are assembled. Onthe under face of head 13 are blocks 16 which are spaced apart to form a central mortise 17. In the ends of the head 13 are sockets 13 which open through the ends of the head, as with the other leg section, and contain rollers 7 which are constructed and mounted identically as are the rollers in the first leg section. The inner ends of the blocks 16 are beveled, and secured to such beveled ends and to the outer ends of the blocks and the head 13 are leg strips 18. Connecting the strips 18, near their lower ends, is a base board 19 having pivotal mounting on screws or the like 20, which project through said strips so that the board may be turned horizontally or vertically when the leg section is upright.
21 designates a bolt which extends through the registering apertures 9 and 14 when the leg sections are assembled and has a nut 22 which seats in a countersink in the head 13, so as to be below the upper surface of the head.
24 designates a top having a central apertore through which the bolt 21 is projected, and having a countersink 25 within which the bolt head 26 and a washer 27 are located to anchor the top to the supporting sections.
In using the pedestal, presuming the parts to be assembled as described, the rollers 7 will project partially above the stand part, so that the top 2 1 will revolve freely thereon, in order that an object mounted on said pedestal may be brought easily and quickly in front of a user.
In shipping the pedestal, or when it is to be stored, the top may be removed by tak' ing out the bolt 21, and lifting the head 13 out of the mortise in the lower head, so that upper ends of the leg strips 3, so as to close 7 the posts 15 will clear their sockets. The upper part of the leg section may then be re moved from the head of the opposite section, so that the parts are separate. When the first leg section is removed the base board 19 may be turned pivotally to lie flat between the leg strips and the parts nested together, so that they will occupy but a 1imited space.
It is apparent that the device maybe easily and quickly taken down or assembled and that the leg sections are so braced that a substantial weight may be supported on the revoluble top, and further that an article supported on said top may be turned freely because of the roller bearing provided for that purpose. 1 p v Having thus described m'vinvention, what I claim as new therein and'desire to secure by Petters-Pateiit is p v 1. In a pedestal; a leg section comprising a head, and supporting strips having inner members bent beneath the head and nior ing inner members bent beneath and mortised into said head, and outer members fixed to the ends of the head, a second leg section comprising a head, blocks fixed to the inner face of said head and spaced to form a central opening, leg strips having inner members fixed to the inner ends of said blocks and outer members fixed to the ends or the head and blocks, the heads of said sections being mortisedinto each other, a bolt extending through the central portions of said heads and projecting thereabove, and a top pivotallv mounted on said bolt;
3. In a pedestal, separate leg sections; a square base board having rounded corners, means for pivotally mounting said board on the members of one of said sections and for detachably securing same to the members of the other sections When the parts are assembled, and a rung connecting the members of the vother leg section beneath said base board;
