Be it known that I, ORANGE E. Hoi.- Lis'rnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to tents and has for its object to provide a tent, the construction of which is such that the same may be readily set up for use and quickly taken down and compactly folded for transportation or shipment.

A further object is to provide a tent in which the employment of guy ropes for supporting the canvas is dispensed with, so that the occupants of the tent may walk around the same without danger' of stumbling.

A further object is to provide improved means for stretching the canvas over the ridge pole and side-pieces, thereby to keep the canvas taut and retain the tent in proper shape.

A further object is to provide a novel construction of stake adapted to engage the longitudinal and transverse sills of the supporting frame for anchoring the latter.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and etliciency.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in forni, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tent constructed in accordance with my invention, the front flaps being drawn back in order to more clearly show the construction of the supporting frame. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detailed sectional view through one corner of the tent showing' the manner of adjusting the side-pieces to regulate the tension of Fig. 4l is a detailed vertical sectional view showing the manner of connecting the forward standard or pole with the ridge pole. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of one of the anchoring pins or stakes detached. Fig. G is a detailed perspective .view of one of the inclined braces detached. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the side braces removed as the pivoted brackets swings laterally to form a support for the fly.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved tent forming the subjectmatter of the present invention comprises a supporting frame including spaced longitudinal sills 5, connected at their opposite ends by transverse sills (i, the latter being provided with tenons 7 to engage correspondingly shaped mortises S formed in the longitudinal sills 5, as shown.

Extending vertically from the inter1nediate portions of the transverse sills 6 are uprights or end poles S) having their lower ends provided with depending pins 10 which enter corresponding sockets formed in the adjacent transverse sills and are locked in position thereon by set-screws or similar fastening devices 11.

rihe upper ends of the end poles 9 are provided with similar pins 12 which enter openings in the ridge pole 13, the latter being extended the entire length of the tent and having its lower longitudinal edge rested upon the upper ends of the end poles 9, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

Disposed in spaced relation to the longi- 5 of the supporting frame are tudinal sills o vertically adjustable side-pieces 14 having openings formed therein for the reception of the threaded ends of the corner rods 15, the lower ends of the rods 15 being eX- tended through intersecting ends of the longitudinal and

transverse sills

5 and 6 for engagement with suitable clamping nuts 16. Disposed at the opposite ends of the tent are gable-pieces 17, the upper ends of which bear against the adjacent longitudinal edges of the ridge pole 13, while the lower ends thereof are inclined or beveled at 1S for contact with the inner longitudinal edges of the side-pieces or bars 14. The lower ends of the gable-pieces 17 are fastened 105 to the side-pieces 14 by means of metallic strips or brackets 19 which extend beneath the side-pieces 14 and are provided with perforations 2O to permit the passage of the adjacent corner rods 15, the upper ends of the gable-pieces 17 being fastened to the ridge pole 13 by similar plates or brackets 21.

It will here be noted that the plates or brackets 21 are provided with openings 22 for the reception of the pin 12, so that the latter serves the dual function of fastening the end poles to the ridge pole, and also for retaining the upper or diverging ends of the gable-pieces in contact with the ridge pole.

In order to reinforce and strengthen the supporting frame, suitable inclined braces 23 are detachably secured to the transverse sills 6, the opposite ends of said braces being bent in opposite directions to produce terminal angularly disposed lips 24. rhe upper lips 24 of the braces are formed with openings for the reception of the adjacent corner rods 15, while the lower lips of said braces are provided with longitudinally disposed slots 25 adapted to receive bolts or similar fastening devices 26.

Surrounding the supporting frame and bearing against the ridge pole 13 and sidebars 14 is a covering 27 formed of canvas or other suitable material and having its lower edges provided with eyelets 28 adapted to engage suitable pins or studs 29 eX- tending laterally from the adjacent longitudinal sills 5. The cover 27 is provided with front and rear flaps 30 which latter are formed with eyes 31 adapted to engage the fastening device or pin 11.

The side walls of the covering or canvas 27 are preferably reinforced and strengthened at the corner rods 15 by sewing or otherwise attaching an eXtra piece of canvas or similar material 32 thereto, the inner face of the covering 27 at the corner pieces being also reinforced by a strip of suitable material 33 having a slot 34 formed therein for the reception of the upper ends of the corner pieces, as shown.

As means for anchoring the supporting frame on the ground, suitable pins or stakes 35 are provided, each stake having its lower end provided with a pointed terminal adapted to be driven or otherwise embedded in the ground, and its upper end provided with a cap 36 having an overhanging arm or extension 37 adapted to receive the adjacent supporting

5 and 6 so as to prevent accidental displacement of the supporting frame without the employment of the usual guy ropes.

1t will here be noted that by loosening the fastening devices 26 and rotating the nuts 35 on the threaded corner-rods 15 the adjacent side-bars or pieces 14 may be raised or lowered so as to tighten the canvas on the supporting frame and thus keep the canvas taut and the tent in proper shape at all times, the slots 25 in the braces 23 permitting the lower ends of said braces to slide on the transverse sill 6 when adjusting the side bars.

1t will also be noted that the nuts 16 by engagement with the threaded rods 15 serve to retain said rods in vertical position and also to clamp the intersecting` ends of the

5 and 6 in engagement with each other.

1n order to prevent the entrance of water to the interior of the-tent the canvas or covering 27 is provided with sockets 38 for the reception of the upper ends of the pins 12. 1f desired, however, ordinary eyelets may be substituted for the sockets shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

rlhe longitudinal sills 5 of the supporting frame are preferably provided with seating recesses 40 adapted to receive one or more transverse sills 41 to which a suitable flooring may be attached if desired.

1n order to permit the use of the cover 27 as a fly, suitable brackets 42 are pivotally mounted for swinging movement on the vertical corner rods 15, said brackets being substantially triangular in shape and having the inner ends of their horizontal arms provided with openings to permit the passage of the vertical rods, and the inner ends of their downwardly inclined arms formed with slots 42 so as to allow the lower ends of the inclined arms of the brackets to slide on the adjacent sills of the supporting frame when the clamping nuts 16 are loosened and thus permit vertical adjustment of the brackets during the stretching of the fly or cover.

lNhen it is desired to use the cover 27 as a fly the nuts 35 are loosened and the brackets 42 swung laterally to a position at substantially right angles to the side pieces 14, after which the converging ends of the brackets on each side of the tent are united by a longitudinal bar 43 and the lower edges of the cover 27 secured thereto, as best shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. By tightening the nuts 35 the brackets k42 may be rigidly supported in extended or operative position. 1f desired, however, the brackets 42 may be dispensed with and the tent used in the ordinary manner, in which event inclined braces similar in construction to the braces 23 may be employed for connecting the longitudinal sills 5 with the side pieces 14, as will be readily understood.

It will also be understood that an extra fly may be attached to the tent if desired, and in some cases hooks may be placed on the side-pieces and end poles for the purpose of hanging coats and other articles.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A tent including a supporting frame formed of spaced longitudinal sills connected by transverse sills, threaded rods disposed at the intersection of the longitudinal and transverse sills, side-pieces engaging the upper ends of the threaded rods, standards disposed at the opposite ends of the tent, a ridge pole supported by the standards, gablepieces extending from the ridge pole to the side-pieces, a cover bearing against the ridge pole and side-pieces, and nuts threaded on the rodsand bearing against the side-pieces for adjusting the latter vertically to eliect the stretching ot the cover.

2. A tent including a supporting frame formed of longitudinal sills connected by transverse sills, threaded bars extending vertically from the intersection of said sills, Side-pieces engaging the threaded rods, a ridge pole, standards supporting the ridge pole, gable-pieces bearing against the ridge pole and side-pieces respectively, clamping nuts engaging the threaded rods, and inclined braces having their upper ends interposed between the clamping nuts and adjacent side-pieces, and their lower ends attached to the adjacent sills of the supporting frame.

3. A tent including a :traine formed of longitudinal sills having mortises formed therein and connected by transverse sills provided with tenons engaging the mortiscs, vertically adjustable side-pieces spaced from the longitudinal sills, threaded corner rods extending through the mortises and tenons at each corner of the tent and engaging the side-pieces, a ridge pole, gable-pieces connecting the ridge pole and side-pieces, a cover, nuts engaging the corner rods l'or adjusting the side-pieces to effect the stretching of the cover' and braces extending between the side-pieces and adjacent longitudinal and transverse sills respectively.

4. A tent including a supporting frame, a cover for the frame, liy supporting brackets pivotally mounted for lateral movement on the frame, and means for adjusting the frame and brackets vertically to regulate the tension of the cover.

5. A tent including a supporting frame, having vertical adjustable side pieces, a cover for the frame, rods engaging the side pieces at the corners of the tent for adjusting the side pieces vertically to effect the stretchingotthe cover, fly supporting brackets pivotally mounted for swinging movement on said corner rods, and means bearing against said brackets for holding the side pieces in adjusted position.

6. A tent including a supporting frame, having vertical adjustable side pieces, a cover for the frame, threaded rods engaging the side pieces at the corners of the tent for adjusting the side pieces vertically to etlect the stretching of the cover, brackets pivotally mounted on the corner rods and adapted to be swung laterally into engagement with the cover for supporting the lower edges thereof in elevated position, and nuts engaging the threads on the corner rods and bearing against the brackets for securing the latter in operative and inoperative positions.
