10 Claims.

The present invention relatesto beach accessories in the nature of shelters for use of bathers desiring protection from the sun and. wind.

An object of the invention is to provide a 5 knock-down shelter of simple and inexpensive construction which may be quickly and easily set up and taken down and which may be rolled into a compact package for transportation and storage.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a shelter having a roof section in which the entire space within the area of and in front of the shelter is free of any ground engaging supports or poles so as to add greatly to 15 the convenience and freedom of movement of users of the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a shelter which may be readily enlarged by the addition of detachable wall sections or may be 20 arranged as a more or less complete enclosure to suit the needs or desires of the user.

Refe rring more particularly to the drawing, the shelter comprises side walls II] and II which 45 are preferably formed from a single continuous strip of canvas or other suitable fabric pro vided with pockets I2 and I3 atthe endsthereof and a pocket Hi intermediate the ends. The stakes are pointed at their lower ends so as to be readily inserted into the ground in an upright position.

A top or roof section II, which forms a hood extending between the angularly disposed sides I and II, is fastened by lines of stitching I8 along two sides thereof to the upper edge of the strip forming the side walls. The shape of the roof or hood I! determines the spread between the side walls when the shelter is set up.

In order to support the roof or hood I! with 10 its free edge above the levelof the upper edge of the side walls a detachable hood supporting arm or boom I9 is provided, being carried by the rear stake I6. The arm I9 serves to hold the hood stretched out smooth from the center stake, being provided at its outer end with a fastener element which engages a complementary fastener element 2| carried at the outer edge of the hood midway of the ends thereof.

The arm I9 is formed with a reduced inner end 20 22 which fits a slot or socket 23 in the rear stake It. Shoulders 24 at each side of the reduced end 22 engage the face of the stake I6 when the end is inserted in the slot 23. A bracing block 25 is secured to the stake I5 and has an 25 upper edge 26 disposed flush with the bottom of the slot 23 and on the same angleso as to seat the'underside of the arm I9, which latter is undercut at 21 to snugly fit the upperend of the brace 25. i i 30 When the arm I 9 is assembled on the stake I6, as shown in Fig. 4, a firm and rigid unit is pro-- duced for the support of the rear portion and the hood of the shelter so that no stakes or posts within the enclosure are necessary.

In order to provide for extension of the side walls as desired, or on occasion a front wall for the enclosure, detachable side wall extension units 29 are provided. These extension units are in the form of canvas strips. the same width, 40 or height, as the side walls I0 and II and are.v provided along one edge with snap fastener elements 30 and along the other edge with hem pockets 3| for stakes 32. Snap fastener elements 3?, are mounted along the ends of the side walls for the attachment of the extension units 29 as seen inFigs; 1 and '2. For purposes of illustration only one of said extension units is shown in position but it will be understood that one may be used on each side and that they may extend in any direction from the ends of the side walls It and II so as to make any shaped enclosure desired within wide limits.

Referring to the modified form of rear stake and hood support shown in Fig. 8, the same comr prises a stake H6 and an arm H9 hinged to the stake adjacent the upper end thereof by a hinge I20 so that the arm can be dropped to a position against the stake when not in use. The arm is held in its outwardly extending position by a suitable fastener such as a pivoted hook l2! carried by the arm and an eye I22 carried by the stake with which the hook engages.

When settingthe shelter up, the side walls are erected by inserting the lower ends of, the stakes l5 and I6 into the ground or sand, roughly outlining a triangle, the hood supporting arm is then assembled with the rear stake, or in the case of the pivoted arm is fastened in elevated position and the hood is stretched out on the arm and fastened by means of the fastener elements 20 and 2|. The side wall extensions can then be erected in the desired position if needed.

Since the stakes are the only rigid part of the structure, it is obvious that the entire shelter can be rolled up into a compact roll for trans-,

portation or storage. a

While preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described by way of illus tration, it will be understood that various other modifications in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the claims.

We claim:

1. A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the remote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, and means carried by said rear stake member for supporting said hood section intermediate said side walls. A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the remote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, means carried by said rear stake member forsupporting said hood section intermediate said side walls, fastener elements carried by said side walls at theouter ends thereof, and a detachable side wall extension member having fastener elements along the edge at one end thereof for engagement with said fasteners on said side walls and a stake at the other end thereof for holding the sameerect.

A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the re-' mote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, and a forwardly extending arm carried by said rear stake for supporting said hood section intermediate said side walls.

A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other froma rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the remote ends thereof a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, said rear stake having a socket at substantially the level of the upper edge of said side walls, and a detachable arm member having one end formed to fit said socket, said arm extending forwardlyfrom said stake and supporting said hood section intermediate said side walls.

A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the remote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, a forwardly extending arm carried by said rear stake for supportingsaid hood section intermediate said side walls, and means for securing the free outer edge of said hood section to the outer end of said arm.

A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at theremote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said side walls, said rear stake having a socket at substantially the level of the upper edge of said side walls, a detachable arm member having one end formed to fit said socket, said arm extending forwardly from said stake and supporting said hood section intermediate said side walls, and

means for securing the free outer edge of said hood section to the outer end of said arm;

A beach accessory in the form of a shelter comprising upright side walls extending at an angle to each other from a rear junction, supporting stakes secured to said walls at the remote ends thereof, a hood section shaped to bridge the space between said side walls and secured to the latter along the upper edge thereof, a rear stake member at the junction of said I side walls, an arm member hinged to said rear stake at approximately the level of the upper edge of said side walls to swing in a vertical plane from a lowered position againstsaid stake to an elevated position projecting in a forward direction to support said hood section intermediate said side walls, and means for securing said arm a member in said elevated hood supporting posiplane from a lowered position against said stake to an elevated position projecting in a forward direction to support said hood section intermediate said side walls, means for securing said arm member in said elevated hood supporting position, and means for detachably securing the free outer edge of said hood section to the outer end of said arm member.

9. A beach accessory in the form of a knockdown shelter comprising side walls of flexible material arranged at an angle to each other, stake pockets formed at the juncture of said side Walls and at the outer ends thereof, a substantially triangular hood section secured along two sides thereof to the upper edges .of said side Walls, stakes disposed in the stake pockets at the ends of said side walls to support the same in upright position, a rear stake member disposed in the pocket at the juncture of said side walls, and a forwardly projecting arm carried by said rear stake member extending to-the outer edge of said hood section to support the same intermediate said side walls.

10. A beach accessory in the form of a knockdown shelter comprising side walls of flexible material arranged at an angle to each other,

stake pockets formed at the juncture of said side walls and at the outer ends thereof, a substantially triangular hood section secured along two sides thereof to the upper edges of said side walls, stakes disposed in the stake pockets at the ends of said side walls to support the same in upright position, a rear stake member disposed in the pocket at the juncture of said side walls, a forwardly projecting arm carried by said rear stake member extending to the outer edge of said hood section to support the same intermediate said side walls, and means for detachably securing the outer free edge of said hood section to the outer end of said supporting arm.
