COLLAPSIBLE ooT-INcLosURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed June 18, 1919. Serial No. 304,976.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOM D. ANDERSON,
a citzen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cot-Inclosures, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to a collapsible inclosure for camping cots, and the objects of my invention are to provide a structure of the character indicated that can be readily assembled or disassembled, that will occupy but a small space when collapsed, that can be adjusted to varying contours of the ground it covers, that provides a dressing room of convenient size by the side of the cot, that is entirely self-supporting upon the'co-t frame, and, finally, in which a new and novel form of canvas covering is provided for the supporting structure.
In the drawing.:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a structure embodying my invention and operatively mounted on a cot.
Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of one of the rear corner supports of the structure embodying my invention in position on a portion of a cot frame.
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a portion of one of the front supporting members mounted on a cot frame, parts broken away.
Fig. 4c is a side elevation of the central portion of one of the front supporting members showing the hinge and locking means therefor.
Fig. 5 is a detail of the locking member shown edgwise in Fig. 4:.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the cot upon which the structure hereinafter described is mounted, the said cot being provided with orifices 2, one at each corner thereof, and a pin 3 on each end thereof for the purpose hereafter described. At each of the corners of the cot 1 is positioned a corner post 4: having a hook 5 set in its lower end to engage orifice 2 in cot 1. Upon its upper end is a pin 6 to engage an orifice 7 in cross member 8, and of suflicien-t length to pass through canvas covering 9. The post is braced by means of a member 10 pivoted thereto at 11 and engaging pin 3 on cot l as shown by means of a socket 12, several sockets 12 being provided so that the structure can be lowered at will to engage a sloping surface as indicated in dotted lines at 13, without also sloping the bed sur face. The cross member 8 is provided with a hinge at its central portion let to permit folding for packing.
Each of the front supporting members 15 is beveled on its lower end and provided with a hook 16 toengage an orifice 2 and is also provided with a pin 18 upon its upper end to engage front cross member 17 and canvas 9. Cross member 17 is hinged at 19 to render the same collapsible, and each supporting member 15 is hinged at 20 to render the same collapsible. In order to make the hinged joint 20 rigid when in use I provide a flat member 21 pivoted at 22 in such a manner as to lie across the hinged joint when in use on the opposite side thereof to the hinge 20. This member 21 is provided with a hook 23 to engage a threaded pin 24: set in member 15, the threaded oin carrying a wing-nut 25 whereby the mem er 21 may be firmly bound in position and the joint thereby properly reinforced.
The canvas covering 9 drops over the structure described in the manner shown, the members 15 acting as struts and the corners 26 of the canvas structure acting in tension and therefore having cables 27 set therein as shown. Side laps are provided for the front of the canvas structure as shown at 28, the whole front 29 being fastened thereto by fasteners as at 30 or held in a raised position as shown by ropes or other means not shown in the drawing. The sides may be staked to the ground as indicated at 31 or the front may be fastened down as indicated at 32 and the side flap raised a distance as indicated in dotted lines at 33. When collapsed and rolled up the whole structure described forms a small compact bundle having a length 'determined by the length of member 15 when folded. The hinged cross member 17 is placed in loop 3 1 formed in canvas 9.
In assembling, the rear posts and cross bar 8 are placed and braced in position and the canvas covering positioned thereon, the front supports then being positioned, member 17 straightened out and the canvas positioned on pins 18, and finally the bottom edge secured as at 31. The whole now forms a firm substantial inclosure for the cot that may again be easily removed and rolled up into small space. construction is the absence of a rigid memher at corner 26.
It is understood that changes in form, construction, proportions and details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a cot provided with an orifice at each of its four corners, of a corner post removably engaging each orifice means for forwardly and angularly adjusting the rear posts with relation to the cot hinged spacing members connecting the rear posts and the front posts, and a canvas covering supported by said posts and spac- One particular feature of this" ing members and maintaining said posts in given angular relation to said rear posts.
2. The combination with a cot provided with an orifice at each of its four corners, of a post for each corner each post being provided with a hook adapted to loosely engage each orifice hinged spacing members connecting the front posts and the rear posts, a
V canvas covering supported by said posts and spacing members and maintaining said front and rear posts 111 given relation to each other, and means for angularly adjusting 30 said front and rear posts with relation to said cot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature this 12th day of Jun 1919.
TOM D. ANDERSON.
