%M 0 NXIMorarHs' MENTOR ATTORNEY NOEL W. MORANT, OF NEW ORLEANSpLOUISIANA.
surronr non rnornc'rrvn covnnrnes.
To all w from it may concern.
Be it known that I, NOEL WV. MORANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Protective Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a supporting structure forcanopies, mosquito netting and the like, and aims to provide a structure which is susceptible of being collapsed or folded to produce a very compact arrangement of parts so that the struc ture may be conveniently carried from place to place or occupy minimum space when not in use. p
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in conneetion with the accompanying drawings,
the invention residing in the structure, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views wherein,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the manner of supporting a canopy or mosquito netting by the structure forming the subject matter of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the canopy frame supported by the standard in an inactive position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the canopy frame.
Fig. 4 is a view showing this frame folded.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the standard folded.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the base separated from the standard.
The structure forming the subject matter of my invention embodies a standard made up of two sections 10 and 11 respectively which are hingedly connected together as at 12. The sections are of equal length, one of the sections supporting a pivoted hook-like element 12' adapted to receive a headed stud or pin 18 projected from the other section so that the sections are held fixed relatively in superimposed relation. The standard is adapted to be folded for compactness when carrying the structure from place to place, in which instance the hook-like element above mentioned is separated from the Specification of Letters Patent. Patientetl Apr. 26, 1921. i
Serial No. 428,303.
headed stud and the section 11 of the standard folded against the section 10. In order to hold the sections in a folded position I provide the section 10 with a hook-like element 1% which is adapted to receive a headed stud or element 15 carried by the section 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The standard is equipped with a base 16 which is threaded on to the section 10 of the standard so that it can be readily removed when folding the structure to reduce its size, thebase 16 being provided with a plurality of supporting legs 17 which radiate from the base as shown. Secured to the section 11 of the standard is a plate 18 which is formed to provide spaced parallel sockets 19 to support the canopy frame in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
The canopy frame is preferably constructed from wire although other suitable material may be utilized, and embodies spaced upper and lower substantially U shaped elements as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. Theseelements are associated b means of connecting elements 20, the elements 20 depending from the sides of the uppermost U shaped element detachably receiving the adjacent sides of the lowermost 'U shaped element. The sides 22 of the U shaped element A are pivotally connected with the cross piece or". this element as at 23, while the U shaped element B is made up of two identical structure sections 24 which are pivotally connected as at 25. Pivotally secured to the free extremities of the sides 22 of the element A are arms 26 each having a depending portion 27 which are adapted to be positioned within the sockets 19 of the plate 18, whereby the canopy frame in its entirety is supported upon the standard in position for use. The canopy or mosquito netting indicated at C is suspended from the lowermost U shaped element indicated at B in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The canopy C may be moved over and supported in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means of a hook-like element 27 secured to the standard. In addition to collapsing the standard for the purpose above mentioned, the canopy frame may be also folded to provide a. compact article as shown in Fig. 5. For this.
purpose the canopy or mosquito netting C is separated from the U shaped element B, and the arms 26 swung upon their pivots in opposite directions to lie against the sides 22 of the element A. The sides of the element B are separated from the connecting elements 20, which permits the sides 22 of the element A being folded inwardly against the end member of the frame. Manifestly both the standard, and the canopy frame may be folded and the parts arranged very compactly to occupy minimum space when not in use, and the structure set up for use in quick order.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A structure of the character described comprising a standard, a frame including spaced upper and lower sections of substantially U shaped formation, means for connecting said sections together, arms pivotally connected to the uppermost section and designed to support the frame upon the standard, said frame being susceptible of being folded when separated from the standard.
2. A structure of the character described comprising a standard, sockets secured to said standard, a frame including spaced upper and lower substantially U shaped sections, means connecting said sections together, arms pivotally connected to the uppermost section, said arms having offset portions adapted to be received by said sockets, and said frame being susceptible of being folded when separated from said standard.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
