PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL szLUTH R, or rnovrnnnon', RHODE ISL-AND.
mpao vzmi-zur in THE cous'rnucrlou OF'TRUN'KS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,555, dated September 1, 1874; application filed May 20,1874.
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, SAMUEL S. LUTHER, of
the city of Providence, State of Ithode Island,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays for Lidsand for other purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 1 of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and inwhich-- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my lid-stay as applied to the lid'of box when open; and Fig. 2 represents the stay detached from the lid as it appears whenpartly folded.
The nature of my invention consists in havin g a metallic stay for trunk-lids and for other purposes, as willbe hereafter explained. Trunk and chest'lids and table leaves have suffered very' 'much for want of good substam tial practical supports or stays to preserve the hinges and the lid from breakage.
This invention is designed not only to check the lid from falling over back, and so preserve the .hingesand lid from breakage, but is also designed to hold the lid or leaf up while it is which I-make-of brass, or other metals, in two parts, A and B. In one of these I cut or strike out a semicircular slot, 0. This may be formed on the side, as I have it here, or round the end. The two parts, A and B, are riveted together, placing the rivet a in the center of the radius of the semicircular slot 0. In the piece B I .put a stop-rivet, d, which must be placed so it will rotate in the semicircular slot 0, when the parts A andB are open ed and check at the point desired.
The slot 0 and stop-rivet d are so arranged as to have the stop-rivet (1 just pass the .line.
of the centerrivet a, and thus the lid is held 4 I open and locked in position, andcan be closed only by pressing the parts forward with the hand. To apply the stay to the lid 0, as seen in Fig. 1, place the end 0 of part -A about its length .from the hinged edgeinside; fasten through the hole e with a screw or rivet. In like manner fasten the end It oftpart B to the inside of the box D; but if the lid closes'on an incline, proper allowance should be made for the pitch, and the part B fastened accordingly.
When the stay is used for a shelf or tableleaf support it must be reversed, so it will fold in instead of out. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A trunk-stay composed of the parts A and B, the part A having the semicircular slot 0, and the part B having the stop-rivet d, the
two parts A and B pivoted together and operating as set forth.
