UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ORLANDO B. LEE, OF GREENVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT m CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,351, dated August 22, 1876; application filed July 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO B. LEE, of Greenville, in the county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1' is a side elevation, with a portion cut away, to show the arrangement of the parts more clearly. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views, showing various portions of my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the peculiar devices which are used in holding the sides of the frame together, as hereinafter more fully described, the object being to furnish in a clothes-drier such connections for the top or sides of the parts of the drier as will permit them to be readily attached and detached.
A A are sides of the clothes-drier composed of a frame, a, and parallel bars b. The bars or rods 12 are galvanized to render them unoxidizable, and may be provided with a head on one end and a thread and nut on the other, to hold them securely in the frame, and also to bind the frame firmly together; B is a hinge, attached to the side A by screws, or otherwise, and is provided with the shoulders c c, which abut when the hinge has opened to the prescribed limit. B is a hinge, attached to the opposite end of the side A, which is similar in all respects to the hinge B, except that it is provided with a slot, d, in place of the circular hole 6 in B. At D are thumb-screws, that pass through the slot (1 and hole einto the side A. A rod, f, passes through ears 9 g, connecting the hinges B B. sides A A are connected, by hinges, at the When the top in the manner described, and placed in A the position shown in Fig. 1, clothes hung on the bars I) will have a space between them for the circulation of air. -If it is desired to convert it into a drier that opens in a horizontal plane, the devices shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are used. E is a strap, placed on an eyebolt or staple, h, on the side of the frame a. A thumb-screw, 2', passes through a hole drilled in the strap E into the part A. Two or more of these straps are used in connecting the sides.- When the sides are connected in this manner the thumb-screw D is removed from the top. When the thumb-screw t and strap E are not in use, they are placed, as shown in Fig. 6. When the drier is placed outside it is prevented from being blown over by a strap, j, which passes through screw-eyes 7c in the sides AA, and is fixed to a stake, l, driven in the ground or to a weight. The slotted hinge (shown in Fig. 7) is intended to be used in place of the strap, if desired. The object in slotting the hinge B is to insure the entrance of the thumb-screw D, as in the manufacture of the parts the holes for the thumbscrews may not always be accurately made.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The frame a b, having hinges B B, the former hinge having shoulders c c and hole 6, while the latter has a slot, 61, in combination with thumb-screws D androd f, the latter passing through ears 9 to connect the hinges, as shown and described.
