HENRY WES'IPHAL, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOW-CASES AND SAMPLE-BOXES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,307, dated August 18, 1874; application filed March 16,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WESTPHAL, of J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases and Sample- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a show-case having a series of independently-revolving shelves, on top of each of which are formed boxes with glass fronts for exhibiting the goods, and all the shelves locked by a single bar, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same part in horizontal section.
A represents the foot or base of my showcase, from the center of which rises a vertical shaft or post, B.
This shaft or post may be made either stationary in the base A, or be made to revolve in the same, as desired.
On the shaft or post B are placed a series of round blocks or hubs, O O, and a series of shelves, D D. The shelves D are circular in form, and each provided with a central opening to pass over the shaft B. On the upper side of the shelf is an upward-projecting circular flange, a, of suitable height, and from this flange to the outer edge of the shelf are a series of radiating partitions, b b, at suitable distances apart, forming a series of boxes or compartments. The partitions b b are, at their outer ends, provided with vertical guides c e, for the insertion of glass plates 01 to close the fronts of said partitions, and yet allow of the articles placed therein to be seen. One
shelf, D, is placed on the center standard or shaft B, and rests upon the base A. A round block or hub, G, is then placed on the shaft within the circular flange a, and fastened to the shaft by a pin, h. The hub 0 extends a short distance above said flange, and around the upper end of the hub is a shoulder or offset, 43. On this shoulder is placed a plate, G, which is fastened to the hub, and covers the boxes or compartments on the shelf. This covering-plate is cut out on one side, corresponding with one of the spaces between two partitions, b b, and from the circular flange a outward to the outer edge, as shown at E in Fig. 2. A second shelf, D, is then placed on top of the first hub 0, another hub secured on the shaft inside of the circular flange on the second shelf, and a covering-plate, G, placed on said second hub, and so on. as many.
shelves and hubs as may be desired, each shelf being provided with a covering-plate, and all the shelves and plates above the bottom shelf are cut out in the same manner as described for the covering-plate of the bottom shelf, so that the opening E extends clear from the top of the case to but not through said bottom shelf.
The shelves D I), as constructed, can revolve around their respective hubs independent of each other, while their covering-plates Gr Gr remain stationary on the hubs, so as to bring any desired compartment of any shelf at the opening E for putting in or taking out the articles.
The shelves D D may be locked in place by means of a single bar, H, which is hinged to the top covering-plate G, and extends down through the opening E to the bottom shelf D, where it is fastened by a latch, I.
When thus locked, the entire case may be revolved on its base, so as to show all sides thereof.
On the upper end of the central post or shaft B is a top piece or knob, J, ornamented in anysuitable manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the shelves D and cov-' ering-plates Gr, cut out, as described, to form the opening E, the hinged bar H and latch I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
HENRY WESTPHAL. Witnesses:
