Be it known that I, JOHN LEVENGUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cabinets for Exhibiting \Vares, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has relation to improvements in cabinets; and the novelty consists in peculiar construction, combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed ont in the claims.

The invention has for its object to provide a cabinet for holding various light articles and exhibiting goods, wares, and forother like purposes; to provide a series of doors for exposing the articles to view or placing them therein; to provide means for simultaneously opening and closing the doors, and to combine, in a device of the class described, simplicity with strength and durability of construction with thorough effectiveness of operation and cheapness of manufacture.

In'the annexed drawings I have shown one form of apparatus or means for simultaneously closing and operating the doors, which I have deemed the best way of carrying my inven tion into effect.

In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a cabinet embodying my invention with the doors thereof thrown open or extended. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device in its closed position. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view on the line a: a: of Fig. 4L, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the apparatus to show the door-operating mechanism.

Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates my improved cabinet, comprising a base piece or board, B, having feet or projections b, and an annular depending rim, b, a top or cap piece, C, supported on the base-piece B by standards or supports D, and a series of doors, E, pivoted at their upper and lower ends in the top and base of the cabinet and arranged and adapted to be simultaneously closed or opened, as will be presently fully described.

In the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the cabinet is made square in cross-section; but the form and shape thereof may be varied without departing from the principle of my invention, andthe pivoted or hinged doors E thereof form the sides or walls of the cabinet, the frame-work thereof being skeletoushaped, and the doors forming the inclosing-walls; but, in lieu of having the walls formed entirely by the said closing doors, vertical walls or partitions to partially inclose each side or any desired number of the sides of the cabinet may be employed and secured rigidly thereto, the doors in such instances being hinged or pivoted to the partitions or rigid walls or independently thereof, as will be very readily understood.

The folding doors in the present instance are rigidly secured in any suitable manner to vertical bars or shafts D', that are pivotall-y or rotatively journaled at their upper ends in the cap or cover, and at their lower endsthey extend through the base or bottom and are provided with an arm, e, for a purpose hereinafter described. y

The doors E are arranged at each side of the case or cabinet, and form the side inclosing-walls thereof, as before described, and are arranged at right angles or in different planes to each other, as shown, the free outer ends thereof abutting or fitting against one of the uprights or supports D, which thus serves as a stop to limit the inward-folding movement of the doors, and when the doors are thrown open to expose the contents of the cabinets they extend beyond the edges of the top and base of the cabinet and from each cerner or angle thereof.

F designates a shaft or bar extending vertically through the middle ot' the cabinet or case, and'having its bearings in the cap and base thereof. The upper end of the shaft is provided with a knob or handle piece,f, for its convenient rotation by hand, and the lower end of said shaft is provided with armsf, arranged at different angles thereto, one arm j being provided to each arm e of the journaled door-supporting bar D to operate the arms f thereof, which in turn operate to change the relative positions of the arlns e and the doors E, the pinsf2 of the shaft-armsf sliding in the grooves and operating them simultaneously. G designates shelves either loosely or rigidly mounted on the shaft F within the cabinet, and serving to hold the articles to be exhibited, or other devices.

The cabinet may beinished and upholstered and decorated in any suitable manner, and is particularly adapted for use as aladys companion,7 although it can readily be adapted for use as an exhibition-cabinet to display spools of silk, cotton, jewelry, and the like.

I do not desire to eonne myself to the exact details of construction and form and proportion of parts herein shown and described, as I am aware that changes therein can be made without departing from the principle or sacrilicing the advantages of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*

l. In a cabinet, the combination of the cap and base pieces, the supports D, secured to and connecting the said pieces and arranged near the edges thereof, the swinging doors jonrnaled in the cap and base pieces and arranged to fold ,inwardly and lie within the edges of the said pieces', said doors forming the inclosing-walls of the cabinet and abutting against the supports at their4 edges, the grooved arms e, carried by the doors and arranged within the base, a rotatable spindle extending centrally through the case,^and the arms carried by the spindle and having pins that enter the grooves of the door-operating arms to actuate the doors simultaneously, all larranged and adapted to serve substantially as described.

2. A cabinet comprising the following element-s in combination, namely: base and cappieces, supports D, connected thereto, folding doors having shafts journaled in the cabinet and arranged to form inclosin'g-walls thereto when closed, grooved arms rigidly secured to the door-shafts, an operating-shaft mounted in the cabinet and carrying arms at its lower ends, provided with pins that fit the grooved arms and simultaneously open and close the doors when the operating-shaft is rotated, and f
