Description
A. F. NHLLER.'
Post Office Letter Case.
.No 125 606l PatentedApril9,1872.
my z UNITED STATES ALLEN F. MILLER, OF GALVA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-OFFICE LETTER-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,606, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN F. MILLER, of Galva, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-0fce Files; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a circular revolving post-office file, divided vertically in two parts hinged together on one side, and having boxes or pigeon-holes arranged cireumferentially in tiers of sufficient number to give one box or pigeon-hole to each letter of the alphabet in each tier; and, also, in each vertical row formed by said tiers, all having the letters of the alphabet marked upon them, in the order hereinafter described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part 4of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device complete.- Figure 2 is a plan view of the foot or base with the bottom rim, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through one of the tiers.
A represents the base or pedestal, made in any desired manner and of any suitable dimensions. In this base is lixed an upright shaft or pivot, B, which passes through the center of a cross-bar, D, in a circular rim, C. For better security and convenience this shaft should extend up as high as the entire file, and pass through a similar cross-bar in the top rim C. Between the two rims, C and C', are arranged twenty-six tiers of boxes or'pigeon-holes, e e, each tier having twenty-six of such boxes or pigeon holes. On the outer circumference of the upper rim C are marked, stamped, or in any suitable manner affixed, the twentysix letters of the alphabet, in their 'regular order, and corresponding with the twenty-six vertical rows of boxes formed bythe tiers. Upon each box or pigeon-hole in each of said twenty-six vertical rows is then marked in regular order with a letter of the alphabet, with the top letter immediately behind it. For instance, the top box of the row marked A on the top rim, has the letters A A on it; the second, B A; the third, G A 5 the fourth, D A, and so on downward. The other twenty-live rows are marked in a similar manner, substituting the top letter, whatever that may be, for the common letter A in the above example. This arrangement of a post-office file will give seven hundred and seventy-six boxes or pigeon-holes in a convenient and compact form, so that mailmatter may be readily distributed and delivered. This post-office le is bisected vertically, and the two parts hinged together, so that for distribution the file may be opened and the person distributing the mail may stand in the center, and put the mail-matter in the boxes or pigeon-holes from the inside. The boxes are lettered on the inside the same as on the outside.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cylindrical-revolving post-office le, when divided vertically in twoparts hinged together on one side, and having the letters of the alphabet arranged at both ends of the pigeon-holes or boxes, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
ALLEN F. MILLER.
