JACOB GHESLEY KINNEY, OF HUBARD, ARKAXSAS.
SPOOL-CABIN ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,263, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed September 2, 1890. Serial No. 363.780. (N0 model.)
To (0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB CHESLEY KIN- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubard, in the county of \Vashington and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful SpooLGabinet, of wlrich the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to a cabinet for spools of cotton, silk, &c.; and among the objects in view are to provide a convenient and ornamental cabinet adapted to receive the various grades and colors of spools, silk or cotton, exhibit the same to view, and to prevent pilfering from the cabinet, and, furthermore, to obviate the entrance of dust thereinto.
\Vith the above and various other objects in view, hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafterspecified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the frame; Fig. 4, a detail in perspective of one of the slides. Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the removable compartments.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the base of the frame-work, supported upon suitable standards or feet 2 and having rising therefrom the uprights or standards 3, each pair of which is connected by a transverse bar 5, said bars intersecting each other at their centers. This framework may be formed of wood or metal, or a combination of both, as may be desired. The cylinder consists of alower base or circular disk 6, provided upon its lower side with a conical bearing-point 7, adapted to take removably in a bearing-cavity 8, and an upper disk 9, having a central opening 10,into which depends the lower end of a vertical axis or hearingpin 11. The upper and lower heads or disks of slides 1i. The slides 11L at their opposite edges take under the ways and at their front ends terminate in enlarged heads 15, bifurcated as at 16, and pivoted in the bifurcations are pulls 17. The upper sides of the slides have formed thereon longitudinal ribs 18, which for a portion of their lengths near their front ends are reduced, as at 19, leaving the rear portions raised. The outward movements of the slides are limited by small springs 20, located in shallow recesses 21, formed in the under sides of the slides and near their rear ends, these springs being adapted to abut against a cross-bar or stop 22, located at the front ends of the compartments 12. Glass panels 23 are removably mounted in opposite guides 24, formed in the sides of the partitions 11, and each compartment is covered by a removable cover 25.
fit within and be removed from the compart' ment, the number of boxes agreeing with the number of compartments. These boxes are of a width adapting them to receive spools,
partitions 27 into two or more compartments 28, each of which may be filled with a series of spools. The partitions of the compartments are provided with recesses 29 at their lower ends, which recesses are over the reduced portions 19 of the slides.
30 designates a track formed of metal and of nearly circular shape, the ends of the track being spaced apart to form an opening 31, which is the front or discharge-point of the cabinet.
32 designates a series of L-shaped keepers which depend from each of the slides l-i near their front ends and take against the inner side of the track, whereby said slides may be withdrawn only at the discharge-point.
The cabinet is so located that the dischargepoiut is behind the counter or out of the reach of persons disposed to pilfer, and each of the compartments are numbered, as shown, to indicate the grade of thread, cotton or silk, contained upon the spools therein. If desired, the pulls of the several slides may be colored to indicate the color of the cotton, and I prefer to locate the black and white cotton or silk of one grade side by side, indicatingthe color by means of the handles.
26 designates a removable box of a size to and may be subdivided longitudinally by In practice each of the compartments of the several boxes are filled with the goods, the series of spools of each compartment resting upon the rib 18 at its reduced portion. If it be desired to take a spool from a certain compartment, the cylinder is rotated until the pull of that compartment is opposite the space 31 of the track. The slide 14 is now drawn out and the lower spool of the front compartment is W discharged. As the slides move forward, the lower spool of the rear compartment, or if more than two compartments be used the lower spool of the second compartment, is also advanced by reason upon. In the bottom disk 6 of the cabinet is" formed a pair of bolt-openings 33, and at one side of and below one of the circular paths traveled by said openings there is pivoted, as at 34, a bent spring 35, provided at its free end with a bolt 36. By swinging the free end of the spring with the path of the openings the bolt will engage with the same, and thus lock the cabinet against revolution in either direction, while by swinging the spring to either side, so that the bolt is out of the path of the openings, the. cabinet may be freely revolved. Numerous other forms of catches will readily suggest themselves.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with a frame-work, of a cylinder mounted in the frame and adapted to rotate and divided into a series of radiating spool receiving compartments, and slides mounted in each of said compartments and adapted at each outward reciprocation to withdraw a spool, substantially as specified.
2. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with a frame-work, of a cylinder mounted for rotation therein and having a series of radiating compartments, slides mounted in the compartments, a circular track mounted on the base and provided with an opening, and depending keepers secured to the slides and taking against the inner side of the track, substantially as specified.
3. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with the frame-work, of a revolving cylinder mounted therein and provided with spool-receiving compartments, a spring-pressed bolt mounted in the base, and a series of openings located in the under side of the cylinder above the bolt, substantially as specified.
4. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with the base, of a rotatable cylinder mounted in the base and provided with a series of radiating compartments, each of which is provided with opposite ways, a slide mounted in each of the compartments, terminating in a pull at its front end and in rear of the same provided with a longitudinal rib upon its upperside, said rib being reduced at a point opposite the compartments, and a series of removable spool -receiving boxes mounted in the compartments, each having a partition for subdividing the blocks, which partition at its lower edge is provided with a recess to afford communication between the lower ends of the compartments, substantially as specified.
5. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with a frame-work, of a cylinder mounted in the frame and adapted to rotate and divided into a series of radiating spool-receivin g compartments, slides mounted in each of said compartments and adapted at each outward reciprocation to withdraw a spool, and depending keepers secured to the slides to limit the outward movement of the same, substantially as described.
6. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with a frame-work, of a cylinder mounted in the frame and adapted to rotate and divided into a series of radiating spool-receivingcompartments,slides mounted 9 in each of said compartments and adapted at each outward reciprocation to withdraw a spool, and a spring-pressed bolt adapted to lock the cylinder at Various intervals of its rotation, substantially as described.
7. In a cabinet of the class described, the combination, with the base, of a rotatable cylinder mounted in the base and provided with a series of radiating compartments, a slide mounted in each of the compartments, and a series of removable spool-receiving boxes mounted in the compartments, substantially as specified; I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB OHESLEY KINNEY.
