Description

UNITED AS-'IA'rns PATENT FEICIEI.y
WILLIAM ROEMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAWL-STRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,283, dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Shawl-Strap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which the gure is a perspective view of a shawl-strap constructed with my improvement.
My invention relates to an improvement in shawl-straps for binding shawls or other garments in packages convenient for traveling; and consists in employing a stitt metallic bar with its wider surfaces in line with the handle-that is, its edge 4bearing upon the shawl orpackage strapped-and also in having the connections between the'bar and handle direct, without any in tervening staples, rings, or links.
In the drawing, A represents the stift metallic bar, and B the handle. C C are straps in their proper places. In the bar A are slots d d d for the reception of straps, and e e for the reception of the ends of the handles.
It will be observed that as the straps pass through the shorter diameter of the bar the longer diameter will be vertical to the package strapped, and for the same reason the handle will be in line with the greater surface, if it is secured directly to the bar, as shown. In this position the force, in carrying the package, acts against the bar edgewise, and I secure the greatest amount of strength for the least amount of weight, a principle well known in engineering. The next advantage which the position of the bar produces is that it enables me to secure the handle directly to the bar by means of the slots e e, into which the clips upon, the ends of the handle are inserted.
Heretofore, the stift' bar being flat upon the package, staples and rings and connectinglinks were necessary, which were not only expensive, but liable to break.
My mode of connection simplifies this construction and cheapens and strengthens the article.
Having fully described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shawl-strap having a rigid strap-bar, arranged to be held edgewise upon the package strapped, substantially as described.
2. In a shawl-strap, a rigid bar having strapslots d d d and handle-slots e e, in combination with straps and a handle directly connected, substantially as shown and described.
The above specification of my said 'invertion signed and witnessed at Newark this 13th day ot July, A. D. 1874.
WILLIAM ROEMER.
