To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, VINCENT S. BARBER and SAMUEL D. REYNoLns, of Rochelle, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Collar and Hame; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in combined collar and hames, the object of the same being to provide an article of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in View our invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detached View of our improved loop or keeper, and Fig. 4 is a View of the upper part of a hame.

A represents a collar, preferably made of wood, the upper portion of the same being cut away on its side, forming the shoulder B.

To the front of the collar is secured the metallie hames, the same being adapted to conform to the shape of the collar, the upper portion of the hames beingbent at right angles, which brings the upper strap-keepers, D, on the sides of the collar-sections above the shoulder B. Below the keepers D is secured the rein-ring E, below which, and near the center of the hames, is secured the tug or draft iron F, which is formed separately from the hames, and removably secured by means of the screws or other fastening devices, G. The lug H is formed integral with the hames, and has their end curved, so that when theironFis secured in position a holdback-ring, I, may be held securely therein. The metallic hames G are preferably constructed as shown, and are pro- Vided with the central rib, J, whereby its strength is increased without adding materially to their weight. The lower ends of the hames are provided with the recesses K,which are formed by means of the bars L and M, the forward inclosing-bar, M, of which is beveled,

sewed together at each end, and to the upper piece, 0 of which is secured the fasteningstrap P. It will be observed that the sides of the top leather on the pad are left free, the object of which is for convenience in introducing a padding of any desired material when it is deemed advisable to provide a soft pad or other cushion. The outside or front face of the collar is provided with the buttons Q, to which is adapted to be fastened the loops R, connected with the cushion or sweat-pad S, constructed to conform to the shape of the collar, the opposite side thereof being fastened to the series of buttons, thus affording an efficient pad, which may be readily removed when worn and a new one substituted therefor at a small expenditure. The metal loop U is preferably used on the top piece, 0, of the pad, the same being provided with the hole V, through which the rivet is passed and secured, thus leaving the space W for the reception of the free end of the strap. The hame-strap a is provided near its buckle end with the metallic keeper, which is adapted to be attachedto the strap, as shown-that is, with the two parallel thicknesses of leather passed through the large opening 0, formed between thebars d and c. The free end of the strap,when passed through and secured to the buckle, is then passed through the smaller opening f of the keeper, which is formed between the bars d and g. The keeper need not be limited in its application to the hame-strap, as the same can be effectually applied to other portions of harness. 7

Having fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination,with the collar-sections and metallic hames rigidly secured thereto, of the sweat-pads, constructed substantially as described, and loops and buttons for removably securing the pads to the collar-sections.

2. The combination,with the collar-sections and the metallic hames rigidly secured thereto, the latter being provided with strap-keepers and rings, of the sweat-pads and buttons and loops for removably securing the pads to the collar-sections.

8. The combination,with the collar-sections and metallic hames secured thereto, each hame being provided with a rib, J of the draft-irons F, each having a recess corresponding with the rib on its respective hame and removably secured against the face of its hame, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with the wooden collarscctions, of the metallic hames having the bent or turned upper ends, as shown, and the strapkeepers secured to said turned upper ends, the said collar-section's and hames being arranged substantially as described, whereby the upper ends of the hames are supported by the wooden collar-sections.

5. The combination, with the collar-sections and'the metallic hames. the latter having the outwardly and upwardly curved lugs H, of a tug or draft iron secured to each hame and resting on the lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

' 6. The combinatio'mwith the collar-sections, of the metallic hames secured thereto and proj ecting below the sections, each of said hames being provided at its lower end with an end bar and a cross-bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. The combination, with the collar-sections having strap-keepers thereon, and a strap, P, connecting the collar-sections, of the top pad secured to the strap 1?, and consisting, essentially, of two or more thicknesses of material secured together at each end, as described, the side edges of the material composing the pad being left free or open for the insert-ion and removal of padding, substantially as set forth.

8. In a horse-collar, the combination, with the collar-sections and hames secured thereto, of the strap connecting the lower ends of the hames', and the metallic loop having flat end bars and a fiat intermediate bar and loosely secured on said strap,substantially as set forth.
