SAMPLE CASE, CONTAINER, AND DISPLAY STRUCTURE.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, LAZURE L. GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample Case, Container, and Display Structures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein vto. the accompanying drawing. I
This invention primarily relates to a combined sample case, container, and display structure; it, has especial reference to that class known'as samplecases for receiving and displaying articlesof merchandise; and it is particularly useful in the so-called systems of house to housel sale of such articles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a structure which is neat in: appearance, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, andconvenient to handle at all times, and whereby merchandisesamples may readily be inserted and held in a flat and unwrinkled condition, whether the caseis open or closed.
Subsidiary objects-and, advantages of the structure will be self-evident from tl1e"fol-.
lowing description In order that the invention may readily be understood, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, these being, however, merely illustrative. It is to be understood that the embodiment herein revealed is susceptible of a wide range of modification and variation without departing from the salient features or underlying principles of the invention.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a view inelevation of the structure in open position and displaying articles of merchandise which, in this instance, are stockings and half-hose; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the structure, partly closed; I
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the structure entirely closed; I Fig. 4 is a. view inseotion on the line 44;, Fig. 3'; and i vFig. 5 is a fragmentary view, in elevation, of the structure in open position. b
In these drawings, the reference-chemo ter 1 designates, generally, a receptacle or case, constituting a combined sample-case, container, or display structure to receive Application filed October's, 1823. SerialNO. 666,947.
various articles of merchandise, such as hosiery. c
The structure-being in this instance particularly adapted for holding and displaying hosierypreferably. comprises two main sections or components 2 and 3, and a flap-section or component 4. The main sections-or components are approximately of the same size, are each of flexible or unstiifened material, and are covered in any appropriate manner and withany suitable material. The sections 2, 3 and i are preferably and as shown, joined by'a plurality of flexible or unstifiened parts or hinges 5 and 6, and whereby the sections are foldable one upon the other. Associated with the hinge or bendable portion 6 are a plurality I of fastening-devices 7 to subserve a function presently to be described. a
Carried by the main-section 2 and the flap-section 4 are coacting fastening devices 8 and 9, respectively, and whereby the flapsection, when foldedagainst the outer face of the main-section 2, may be fastened there-' to and thereby hold the entire structure securely closed. a
Integral with, or otherwise attached to, the upper and lower portions of the main section or component 3 are two articlecarrying'end-sections '10 and 11, respec tively. I
These end-sections 10 and 11 are, preferably and as shown, connected to the section 3 by hinges or bendable portions 12 and 13, respectively, and these permit the end-sections to be folded into a normally closed position and against. the inner face 3 of the section 3 (as shown in Fig.3), or to be opened out into a displaying position be folded against the inner face 10" ofthat section and to beheld in such folded position by a suitable fastening-1nstrumentality, such as an elastlc band or retalning-element 16.
This flap, as influenced by. said band, operates to hold in place the articles to be displayed which, in this'instance, are stockings A and half-hose B. Similarly overlying the inner face 10 ofthe end-section 10 is another re-. ta-ining-element 'or elastic band 17 which operates to hold the articles Aa-nd B flat against said face of the section and against V ative The endsection l1 alsois, prefeinblj and as shown, provided with a plurality of retaining-elements or elastic bands 18, which function to hold the foot-portions of the articles A (for instance) against the inner face lltof the section-'11 inthe same way and for the same purpose as the retaining. element 17 operates inconjunction-with the section 10; A
lt will be understood from the foregoing that thean a-in sections 2- and 3, the flap-sectionhdhe end-sections 10 and ll,-a-nd the flap 15 maybe regarded (forall practicalpurposes) as integra-lwith each'other and, in consequence, adapted to be folded into an. article-holding; relation and, thus," into a very compact. form, making the structure convenient to handle'and carry and. yet, when opened up, notof unwieldy or inconvenientdimensions: hen beinguso opened upythe articles contained therein are likewise-automatically,opened out in to aw'fiat condition fordisplay purposes. The-retain ing-elements serve to'holdthe articles in- PIOP81""POSlf-l011 and condition, no matter in what'positionthestructure, itself, may be disposed.-
It will be noted th-a-twhen the end-sections are foldedinto their-closed position, a portion of-one-of them overlies aportioir of the other.
Associated withtlre main sections, andsecured at" their hinge-6 by the fastener-dc vices 7, is a display-leaflQ, preferably; of stiff material and, in this instance, carrying color-indicating specimens 20 on oneface, the opposite face being adapted, preferably, to engage the aforementioned overlapping portion of the end-sectionand therebyoperate to hold the end-sections in closed position-.-
Ifdesirecha plurality of leaves 21, ofpaper or like material and bearing illustrative and'descriptivematter, may be secured, as by the fasteners 7, in association with the main sections Qand-S and the displaylea f 19.
From the foregoing, it will. be perceived that=the structure-herein disclosed includes a plurality of main' sections joined by a bendable portion constituting 'a hinge, a flapsection also joined by a bendable" section to one of themain sections, end-sections joined to one ofthe main sections by bendable portions, and a flap'joined to one of the end sections by a bendable portion: all of these sectionsbeinggintegral one with theother and foldable: one upon another; and, in operassociation 7 therewith, interleafed di play" and illustrative elements, in the form OfJeaVes-tha-t are detachably-secured in the structure and. which, With the main sections involving cover meinbers', constitute ahook;
all in combination with a display device comprising one of the main sections, the endsections, the flap on one of these sections andthe retaining elements' associated with the sections; and all presenting a structure which malics'for convenience at all times, either when closedor open.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A. sample-case including an article carryingniain section, upper and lower article-carrying. sections thereon, a second main section on one side of the first main section, article-holding leaves clamped be tween saidinain sections, a flap, ont-he other side of the first-named section, and means for detachably securing thejliap to the second main section.
2. A sample-case including an articlecarrying. mainsection, upper and lower article-carrying sectionsthercon and foldable thereover, a second inain section on one side of the first -ma1n section, article-holding leaves clamped between; said main sections,
a flap on the other side of th e first-named section, and-means forv detachably securing the flap to the second inain section.
3. Av combined sample-case and display structure including a plurality of foldable main sections and a flap section, bendable connecting portions joining the sections, ar tic-le-carrying sections on the upper and lower portions of one of the main sections and foldable against-one face thereof,-securing means for holding an article in secured position on the article-carrying sections and. the main section which carries said article-carrying sections, and leaf-fastening means associated with the bendable portion which is locatedbetween two of the main sections.
4;. A combined sample-case and displaystructure including a plurality of foldable main sections and a flap-section, bendable connecting portions joining the sections, article-carrying sections on the upper and lower portions of one of the main sections and foldable against one face thereof, a flap joined to one of said articldcarryingsec- Hit) of the article-carrying sections, leaf-fastening means associated with the bendable por-' main sections and a flap-section, bendable connecting portions joining the sections, article-carrying sections on the upper and lower portions of one of the main sections and foldable against one face thereof, a flap joined to one of said article-carrying sections, securing means for holding the flap and an article in secured position on one of the article-carrying sections, leaf-fastening means associated with the bendable portion between two of the main sections, and a display-leaf attached between the main sections by said fastening means and overlying said article-carrying sections when in their closed positions.
7.
