Description

A, HERRMANN.
'"Belts.
No.153,955. Patented Aug.H,1874..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. ADOLPH HERBMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,955, dated August 11, 18 74 application filed July 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HERRMANN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Belts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the belt, showing its two sides or faces, and also the method of using the buckle. Fig. 2 shows the belt as worn without the buckle, and Fig. 3 represents side elevations of the two loops used-in my invention detached from the belt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists in so adapting a belt for ladies use that it may be worn with either side or face outward to match a corresponding dress of the wearer.
A and A represent the two sides or faces of the belt, which, with or without an intermediate lining, form the strap or body of the belt. For these two sides I use materials which difier in color, or in texture, or in both of these respects. Thus, for instance, I may make the side A of velvet, andA of silk or satin; or I may make the side A of black or dark-colored silk, morocco, or leather, and A of leather, silk, reps, or poplin of a lighter color.
There is, of course, no end to the combinations and variations which may thus be produced by combining different suitable materials in the belt for the two sides thereof, and in such a manner that either side may be, at
.the option of the wearer, the right or exposed side.
To enable either side to assume that character, I use a binding, a, which is stitched evenly on both sides, presenting the same appearance on either side of the belt. This binding may be made of silk, satin, worsted, or any other suitable material, differing preferably in color and texture, or in both these respects, from the materials used in thetwo sides.
B and B are two loops, which form part of each belt, and are alternately used with it. One of these loops, B, is made of thesame material as that side of the belt which is designated by the letter A, and the other loop, B, is made of material corresponding to that of the side A. The binding b of these loops is similar to that (a) which encircles the belt.
My improved reversible belt may be worn either with or without a buckle, as shown in the drawing. When used with a buckle, only one eyelet is necessary for the prong, the loop serving on the other end to hold the hook;
and the belt may be made larger or smaller,
to fit any figure, without any sewing on of the hook, merely by turning the belt in to the required size after inserting it through the slot in the hook, and then sliding the proper loop up to the fold, which will hold the hook firmly in position, while at the same time it may be easily adjusted.
In Fig. 1, w represents the prong of the,
buckle C. y is the eyelet, and z is the hook or catch of the buckle.
Without my improved combination of the eyelet, buckle, hook, and loop, at least three eyelets would have to be used to make the belt adjustable to different figures, which would spoil its appearance; or else the purchaser would have to sew on the hook or catch to the size required.
The loop B or B, as the case may be, obviates the necessity for additional eyelets, and also the labor of sewing, and also makes'the belt perfectly reversible, as the buckle, catch,
and loop may be used with either side.
By this construction and arrangement, as hereinbefore set forth,it will readily be observed that my improved reversible belt, with or without the buckle (3, answers practically the purposes of two belts made of different materials, or differing in color, thus saving trouble and expense, and increasing the comfort and convenience of the wearer.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a ladys reversible belt made of any suitable materials, and with the two sides A A differing in color, or in'texture, or in both these respects, from each other, and provided with detachable loops B B, one for each side or face, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
' 2. The combination of the reversible belt A A, having the eyelet y, buckle 0, having the prong ac and catch z, and loops B B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ADOLPH HERRMANN.
