IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,934, dated August 11, 1874; application filed April 18, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. COUCH, of Cold Spring, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Sash-Lock and Ventilator, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window frame and sash, showing the lock in side view, and the ventilator in section. Fig. 2 is a detail top view of the spring-bolt forlockin g the upper sash.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.

The invention consists in a novel method of looking a window-sash by means of a springbolt and spring-lever of peculiar construction as hereinafter described and claimed.

A represents the frame, B the lower sash, and O the upper sash, of the window, which parts are constructed in the ordinary manner. To the forward side of the side bar of the lower sash B is attached a toothed bar, D, which is let into said sash, leaving its teeth projecting, as shown in Fig. 1. E is a leverpawl, the lower end of which is pivoted to the side of the frame A. The lever-pawl E has a notch formed in the inner side of its upper end, to take hold of the teeth of the bar D, and is held forward against said toothed bar by a spring, F, attached to the frame A, and which presses against the outer side of the said lever-pawl E. The teeth of the bar D, the lever-pawl E, and the spring F, are covered by the casing of the window, the inner side of which is recessed to receive them. In

the outer side of the upper end of the leverpawl E is formed a screw-hole, into which screws the forward end of the key G, by which the lever-pawl E is drawn back from the toothed bar D, to allow the sash B to be raised and lowered. The key G can be detached and carried in the pocket, if desired. The key G is inserted through a notch in the inner side of the window-cas ing. H is a bolt, which is placed in a case, I, let into and secured to the top bar of the lower sash B. The bolt H is made with an ofl'set or shoulder, against which rests the end of a coiled spring, J, the other end of which rests against the case I to hold the bolt H out, as shown in Fig. 3. The forward end of the bolt H enters a hole in the side bar of the upper sash 0. Two holes are made in the sash Gto receive the bolt H-one whenthe upper sash O has been raised, and the other when the sash has been partially lowered. The bolt H is pushed forward by the leverpawl E, the upper end of which rests against the outer end of the said bolt H. The bolt H is only held forward when the lower sash B is fully lowered.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bolt H and spring J with the lever-pawl E and spring F, for locking the upper sash of the window, substantially as herein shown and described.
